New Delhi, Aug 5: Liverpool and England midfielder Adam Lallana will miss the first two months of the season through a thigh injury, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed.

Lallana endured thigh injury during Liverpool's Audi Cup defeat to Atletico Madrid in Munich on Wednesday and will now set to miss an opening couple of months to the 2017-18 season.

Lallana emerged as one of the Reds' key players under the German boss and enjoyed a stellar 2016/17 season, scoring eight goals and assisting seven in 31 league appearances last season. But the England international is now believed to be sidelined for the opening long extents of the season as a source close to the club confirmed the midfielder would be even unavailable for a maximum of three months.

"This is certainly not news we would have wanted," manager Jurgen Klopp told the Liverpool website.

"Unfortunately, the damage is such that it will likely mean Adam is out for a couple of months not weeks, so I think we can pretty much rule him out of August and September. Beyond that we will monitor and wait and see.

"He is a boy with a world-class attitude to everything professionally and he has always come back in good time from injury setbacks since I have been here, so we will see."

Should the midfielder face such a critical injury, he will miss games against Watford, Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Manchester City, Burnley and Leicester City. in the early stages of the Premier League season as well as the opening Champions League playoff fixtures against Hoffenheim.

He will also be an immense miss for England's next two World Cup qualifiers, against Malta and Slovakia in September.

Liverpool will start their Premier League season on Aug. 12 at Watford before playing Hoffenheim in the Champions League playoff round on Aug. 15.
