Inter Secures 2-1 Victory Over Sassuolo To Revive Title Hopes Under Cristian Chivu

Inter Milan achieved a crucial 2-1 win against Sassuolo, enhancing their Serie A title ambitions. Cristian Chivu's team overcame early setbacks and showcased resilience in the final minutes.

Inter Milan revived their Serie A title hopes with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Sassuolo at San Siro. Cristian Chivu's team, coming off two consecutive league losses, managed to secure the win and climb to 10th in the standings. The match could have ended with a more comfortable scoreline if not for Sassuolo's goalkeeper, Arijanet Muric, who made several impressive saves.

Muric's first notable save came in the seventh minute when he expertly tipped Carlos Augusto's shot past the post after a dynamic run from defence. However, Inter took the lead seven minutes later as Federico Dimarco finished off a well-executed move with composure. Despite Muric thwarting Marcus Thuram's near-post effort and Francesco Pio Esposito missing from close range before halftime, Inter maintained their advantage.

Inter Beats Sassuolo to Boost Title Aspirations

The second half remained uneventful until the final 10 minutes when Augusto's attempt deflected off Tarik Muharemovic into Sassuolo's net. Sassuolo quickly responded through Walid Cheddira, who slipped past Inter's defence to find the bottom-right corner. Although Davide Frattesi had a goal disallowed for offside after a lengthy VAR review, Inter held on for crucial points.

Had Inter not secured all three points, they would have collected four or fewer points from their opening four Serie A matches for only the fourth time since 1994-95 and the first since Luciano Spalletti's tenure in 2018-19. Nevertheless, they managed to get the job done. Inter recorded an expected goals (xG) total of 1.81 from 20 shots, six of which were on target, compared to Sassuolo’s xG of 0.9 from nine attempts.

Inter capitalised on their home advantage once again; only Juventus have won more home games than Inter this calendar year in Serie A. Despite Muric making five crucial saves throughout the match, Sassuolo extended their winless streak on the road to 15 matches (three draws and twelve losses), marking their longest such run in Serie A history.

This victory relieved some pressure on Chivu but highlighted that Inter still have room for improvement. Their performance was far from convincing despite securing three vital points against Sassuolo.
