Denzel Dumfries Rescues Inter Milan With Late Equalizer Against Monza

Champions Inter were dethroned from the Serie A summit on Sunday after a 1-1 draw with Monza. Substitute forward Dany Mota put Monza ahead in the 81st minute, but Denzel Dumfries equalised for Inter seven minutes later to avoid an upset.

Lautaro Martinez missed a golden opportunity to give Inter an early lead. Federico Dimarco's perfect cross found Martinez, but his header narrowly missed the target. Dimarco and Davide Frattesi also squandered chances as Monza's defence held firm.

Monza took a surprising lead nine minutes from time when Armando Izzo lofted a neat cross that Dany Mota nodded home. This goal put pressure on Inter to respond quickly.

Inter intensified their efforts after falling behind. Defender Dumfries tapped in a low cross from Carlos Augusto with two minutes remaining, but they couldn't secure a winner.

Despite remaining unbeaten, this was Inter's second draw of the campaign, leaving them one point behind Napoli at the top of Serie A. Monza remains 15th with three points from four games.

Stuttering Start for Nerazzurri

Simone Inzaghi's men have had an unbeaten start but are one point off the pace at the top of Serie A. This contrasts sharply with their recent strong starts in previous seasons.

This is the first time since the 2020-21 season that Inter has failed to win two of their first four matches. Under Antonio Conte that year, they drew one and lost one but eventually won the title.

The silver lining for Inter fans is that history might repeat itself, as they went on to capture the title that season despite a similar start.
