Inter Miami Draws 0-0 At Nashville As Dayne St Clair Shines, Messi Awaits 900th Goal

Inter Miami were held to a goalless draw at Nashville SC in the CONCACAF Champions Cup last-16 first leg, with Dayne St Clair producing crucial saves. Messi, seeking his 900th career goal, was quiet, while the tie remains open ahead of the second leg as both sides press for progression.

Inter Miami left GEODIS Park with a 0-0 draw against Nashville SC, delaying Lionel Messi’s hunt for a 900th career goal in the CONCACAF Champions Cup last-16 first leg, as Javier Mascherano’s side relied on several key interventions from Canadian goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair to keep the tie balanced before the return match at Chase Stadium next Wednesday.

Messi entered the contest having already scored 15 goals in 10 meetings with Nashville, the highest total against any MLS side since the move to the United States, yet this match brought fewer openings, with heavy rain and close marking restricting influence and ensuring the Argentina captain managed only three attempts, a single effort on target and one created chance across a cagey contest.

Inter Miami held 0-0 as St Clair shines

Mascherano felt the cautious nature of the first leg came from how often these sides have met since joining MLS in 2020, explaining how both coaching staffs know many details of the other’s plan after 20 matches, which he said encouraged defensive focus and limited attacking risk during another tense meeting in Tennessee.

"Sometimes when a game ends 0-0 it isbecause both teams were thinking about how to disrupt the opponent's attack, he said. In the end, we played five games in the last three months. Usually, you start to figure out, 'Where can I stop them? And they know how to stop us.

"We knew it would be a tough game because three months ago we came here to face them in a playoff game. They played us the same way. They are very strong at home, have had a good start to this season, are playing very well. But we also were able to resist their pressure. It was a game of pressure versus pressure. It isan even matchup that will be decided in the second match."

Nashville carried more attacking threat across the night, creating better chances and forcing St. Clair into several important stops, yet Miami’s defensive structure largely held, matching Nashville’s intensity without losing shape and accepting limited possession in dangerous areas, which helped protect Messi and other forwards from transition counters while preserving the aggregate stalemate.

The underlying numbers illustrated Nashville’s edge, as the hosts attempted 14 shots compared with Miami’s eight, produced four efforts on target to one and led the expected goals measures 1.19 to 0.32, suggesting Miami’s focus rested on control and risk management rather than sustained attacking waves during the first part of the tie.

St. Clair, recently signed from Minnesota United after winning the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, denied Warren Madrigal, Sam Surridge and Reed Baker-Whiting with sharp saves, performances that underlined why Miami targeted the Canada international, and ensured the team still have a strong chance of progressing when the contest moves to south Florida.

"It was important for us to stay alive in the series and also for him; I know what it means for a goalkeeper to record a shutout, the coach added. He played well. We know what a great goalkeeper he is. When we signed him, we knew we were signing a national team player. Clearly, we have a style of play where the keeper doesn'tget the ball that much, but when they do, they have to respond and he is adapting to thattoo."

Inter Miami home return and CONCACAF Champions Cup context

Miami have opened the season with a long sequence of away fixtures because of construction work related to an upcoming stadium move, so the second leg at Chase Stadium next Wednesday will double as their first home appearance of the campaign, raising expectations of a louder atmosphere and possibly greater attacking ambition in front of local supporters.

"It will be a very, very great night for us, so I am asking the fans to come to the stadium because we need them to help us go through to the quarterfinal,Mascherano said."

Across the wider CONCACAF Champions Cup schedule, fellow MLS club LA Galaxy recorded a 3-0 home victory over Mount Pleasant, with Gabriel Pec scoring all three goals to put the Californian side in a strong position before the return fixture in Jamaica late next week, where Galaxy will aim to complete progression.

The first leg between San Diego FC and Deportivo Toluca produced one of the round’s most dramatic encounters, as Mikey Varas’ San Diego finished with nine players after dismissals, conceded two penalties, yet managed to secure a 3-2 home win, helped by a brace from David Vazquez, leaving the Mexican side needing a response in the upcoming second leg next Wednesday.

The goalless draw leaves Miami and Nashville level ahead of the decisive match in Florida, with Messi still chasing that 900th goal, St. Clair building early trust after the transfer, and MLS representatives LA Galaxy and San Diego FC holding first-leg advantages in their respective CONCACAF Champions Cup ties before another busy week of second legs.
