Inzaghi Believes Conceding First Boosted Inter's Performance In Milan Derby Draw

Inter's head coach, Simone Inzaghi, reflected on the team's performance against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg. Despite trailing early in the second half, Inter managed to secure a 1-1 draw. Tammy Abraham scored for Milan shortly after the break, but Hakan Calhanoglu equalised 20 minutes later. Inzaghi noted that falling behind spurred his team to improve their play.

Inzaghi expressed satisfaction with his players' efforts, especially given the limited squad available. "There were only 14 outfield players available," he explained, highlighting injuries to Marko Arnautovic and Federico Dimarco. Despite these challenges, youth players stepped up, and Inzaghi encouraged everyone to push harder.

Inter have faced AC Milan four times this season across all competitions without a win. They have drawn twice and lost twice. Even with key players like Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi unavailable due to injuries or suspensions, Inzaghi felt their performance deserved more than a draw.

The match saw several scoring opportunities for Inter. "We could've gone in front in the first half," Inzaghi remarked, referencing chances by De Vrij and Frattesi. He acknowledged Milan's goal as a result of an unfortunate ricochet but praised his team's resilience and determination.

Looking ahead, Inter face a demanding schedule with five matches before the return leg against Milan. This includes a Champions League quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich. The physical demands on the players are significant, yet Inzaghi remains proud of their commitment and effort during this busy period.

Reflecting on individual performances, Inzaghi highlighted Calhanoglu's contribution as pivotal. Calhanoglu has been prolific from outside the box this season, scoring four such goals in all competitions. His equaliser against Milan was crucial in keeping Inter's hopes alive for the second leg.

The coach also mentioned upcoming matches and emphasised cautious player management to avoid unnecessary risks before travelling to Parma within two days. "We hope to have more choices in three weeks' time," he stated optimistically about future squad availability.
