Inter's Domestic Double Hailed As Martinez Praises An Important Season

Inter move towards the end of a dominant Serie A campaign with the domestic double secured and one league match left against relegated Hellas Verona. Cristian Chivu’s team reclaimed the Scudetto and then added the Coppa Italia, beating Lazio 2-0 with goals from Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram to claim a 10th title in that competition.

The Coppa Italia win completed Inter’s first double since 2010, when Jose Mourinho’s side also lifted the Champions League and included current head coach Cristian Chivu in defence. Inter have now triumphed in each of their last five Coppa Italia finals, and only Juventus, with 15 successes, have more titles in the tournament’s history.

Inter clinches domestic double, Martinez reaction

Last season ended in frustration for Inter, with defeat in the Champions League final and a second-place Serie A finish leaving the club without silverware. This campaign brings a stark contrast, as Inter finish the 2024-25 season holding both major domestic trophies and preparing for a celebratory final home fixture at San Siro.

Captain Lautaro Martinez underlined how the squad view the campaign, after lifting the Coppa Italia against Lazio. "For us, it was a very important and meaningful victory, he said on Wednesday. We managed to put together a truly important season in terms of play, intensity, performances and results. I am happy because we are finishing the year with two trophies. It has been really important for us. There is always a lot of talk about Inter for everything we have been doing in recent years, but we must continue down this road to win titles because that is what we want. This season, we have won two, and we are truly delighted."

Inter’s final opponents, Hellas Verona, already know relegation to Serie B awaits. Verona sit 19th in the table and cannot escape the bottom three. The contrast in fortunes is clear, with Inter entering the match on 85 points while Verona remain on 20, creating a record 65-point gap between the teams in Serie A.

Federico Dimarco stands out for Inter in Serie A this season. The wing-back has created 93 chances in league play, overtaking Luis Figo’s club mark of 92, set in 2006-07. Dimarco also has 23 direct goal involvements, with six goals and 17 assists, matching Martinez, who has 17 goals and six assists.

For Hellas Verona, Kieron Bowie provides the main attacking spark. Bowie has scored the club’s last three Serie A goals, all scored away from home. The last Verona player to net four successive league goals for the club was Giovanni Simeone in 2021, while Antonin Barak is the only Verona player to score four consecutive away goals, doing so in 2022.

Inter vs Hellas Verona Serie A head-to-head and prediction

History favours Inter strongly in this fixture. Inter are unbeaten in the last 29 Serie A meetings with Verona, winning 24 and drawing five. Only against Sampdoria, where Inter went 30 matches without defeat between 1961 and 1977, have Inter recorded a longer unbeaten sequence in the competition.

Inter’s recent home record against Verona is also emphatic. The Nerazzurri have won each of the last eight clashes between the sides at San Siro. Chivu’s team have scored at least two goals in 26 Serie A matches this season. In the three-points-for-a-win era, Inter bettered that only in 2006-07 and 2023-24, reaching 27 such games in both campaigns.

Verona’s main problem has been in attack. The team have failed to score in 19 Serie A matches during this season. Only in the 1988-89 campaign have Verona finished more league games without a goal, when they drew a blank 20 times. That record highlights the scale of Verona’s struggle before facing the champions at San Siro.

OPTA’s model reflects Inter’s dominance in the data. The win probability for Inter stands at 73.6 per cent, with a draw rated at 15.7 per cent and a Verona victory given 10.8 per cent. These figures align with the form table, the historic record, and the significant points difference between the two clubs.

Outcome OPTA win probability
Inter win 73.6%
Draw 15.7%
Hellas Verona win 10.8%

With the Scudetto and Coppa Italia already secured, Inter approach the Verona match seeking to extend a long unbeaten run in this Serie A fixture and close a strong season with another home victory, while Verona aim to end a difficult campaign with a rare positive result against dominant champions.
