Inter Clinches Domestic Double As Coppa Italia Triumph Seals Season

Inter completed a domestic double after a 2-0 victory over Lazio in the Coppa Italia final, securing a first national cup since 2022-23. First-half goals from Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez settled the contest, meaning Cristian Chivu ended a debut season as head coach with both the Coppa Italia and the Scudetto.

The success also gave Inter a milestone 10th Coppa Italia title, strengthening the club’s position behind Juventus, who have 15 wins. Inter have now prevailed in each of the last five Coppa Italia finals reached, underlining consistent strength in knockout matches across recent seasons.

Inter seal domestic double with Coppa Italia

Inter built the platform during a controlled first half, when eight of their 11 attempts arrived, including all three on target. Their superiority showed in the numbers, with 1.69 expected goals, compared with Lazio’s 0.73 from eight shots, reflecting clearer chances created before the interval.

Martinez once again delivered in a Coppa Italia final. The captain has now scored three times in showpiece games in this competition, following a brace against Fiorentina in 2023. No Inter player has more, with Hernan Crespo and Julio Cruz also reaching three goals in Coppa Italia finals.

Martinez almost opened the scoring early on, heading wide from a promising position. Inter still went ahead in the 14th minute when Federico Dimarco’s inswinging corner glanced off Thuram, then deflected off Adam Marusic and into the net, with the French forward credited as scorer.

Nuno Tavares briefly kept Lazio in touch with a last-ditch block, stopping Denzel Dumfries’ volley. However, Tavares then lost possession to Dumfries near the area. Dumfries surged into the box and drilled a low cross that Martinez finished into an empty goal after 35 minutes, doubling Inter’s lead.

Inter and Coppa Italia final: Lazio response and Martinez data debrief

"Data Debrief: Martinez picks his moment" felt apt as this was Martinez’s first Coppa Italia goal of the season, after featuring in only one previous tie. Inter’s clinical work before half-time meant the second half became about game management, with Lazio chasing a route back.

Edoardo Motta kept Lazio in contention by denying Piotr Zielinski soon after the second goal. Lazio finally threatened on the stroke of half-time when Gustav Isaksen’s strike took a deflection and went narrowly wide. The Serie A side still entered the break two goals behind, needing a major momentum shift.

Tijjani Noslin curled wide as Lazio tried to rally after the restart. Inter then almost stretched the margin when Luis Henrique missed a chance for a third goal, before Josep Martinez had to save from Boulaye Dia at the other end. Tempers rose late on, yet Inter held firm and closed out the win.

Inter’s numbers from the Coppa Italia final underlined a controlled performance and highlighted the club’s wider record in the competition.

The victory delivered Inter a first domestic double since 2010, when Chivu still played for the club. By guiding Inter to the Scudetto and Coppa Italia in the first season in charge, Chivu matched that achievement from the pitch in the technical area, finishing the campaign with two major trophies.
