Inter Must Be More Clinical In Front Of Goal, Cristian Chivu Emphasises After Draw

Cristian Chivu expressed disappointment with Inter's finishing following a 1-1 draw against Monterrey. Despite dominating the match and achieving high expected goals, he highlighted the need for greater clinical efficiency in future games.

Inter Milan's opening match in the Club World Cup ended in a 1-1 draw against Monterrey, leaving Cristian Chivu dissatisfied with their finishing. Despite dominating the game, Inter couldn't capitalise on their chances. Sergio Ramos scored for Monterrey, while Lautaro Martinez equalised for Inter. The Italian side had a higher expected goals (xG) rate of 2.7 compared to Monterrey's 1.1, showcasing their attacking efforts.

Inter's first-half performance was particularly impressive, with an xG of 1.9, the highest by any team in the tournament's opening half. However, Ramos' goal was Monterrey's only shot on target throughout the match. Chivu acknowledged Inter's ability to create opportunities but emphasised the need for more precision in front of goal in future matches.

Chivu Calls for Improved Finishing from Inter

Chivu expressed satisfaction with his team's movement and rotations during the first half, despite falling behind. He noted that Inter managed to cause problems for Monterrey with their play style. However, he also pointed out that they were occasionally vulnerable during transitions due to Monterrey's strength in those situations.

Chivu maintained Inter's usual 3-5-2 formation but is considering tactical adjustments, such as positioning Henrikh Mkhitaryan behind a lone striker. "Mkhitaryan behind the striker? We need to try to keep on developing new solutions and be ready for our upcoming matches," he stated. The coach aims to explore different strategies to enhance their performance against defensive setups.

In the second half, Inter struggled with slower ball movement but still managed to create some chances. Chivu highlighted the importance of quicker transitions and faster ball circulation to improve their attacking efficiency. Despite these challenges, he praised his players' commitment and effort throughout the match.

Upcoming Challenges and Player Performances

Inter will face Urawa Reds next at Lumen Field in Seattle on Saturday. Urawa suffered a 3-1 defeat against River Plate in their first Group E match. Franco Mastantuono stood out against Urawa by winning 11 out of 19 duels contested, showcasing his potential ahead of his move to Madrid after the tournament.

The young player's performance places him among the top duel winners in this Club World Cup edition, alongside Youcef Belaili of ES Tunis and Botafogo's Gregore. As Inter prepares for their next challenge, they aim to refine their tactics and improve their finishing skills.

Chivu remains optimistic about his team's prospects despite initial setbacks. He believes that with continued effort and strategic adjustments, Inter can achieve better results in upcoming matches and advance further in the tournament.
