Inter Milan Misses Out On Serie A Top Spot After Drawing With Monza

Inter Milan faced a setback in their Serie A campaign, drawing 1-1 with Monza. Despite dominating the game and creating multiple chances, they failed to secure a win. Simone Inzaghi highlighted the team's missed opportunities and technical mistakes.

Simone Inzaghi expressed his frustration as Inter Milan had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Monza. Despite numerous opportunities, they fell behind in the 81st minute due to Dany Mota's goal. Denzel Dumfries managed to equalise seven minutes later, but Inter lost their top spot in Serie A to Napoli after dropping points for the second time this season.

Inzaghi acknowledged the team's struggles against Monza's solid defence during a press conference. "We had difficulties against a team that played a good defensive game," he said. "We had chances that we didn't convert, we made technical mistakes." He also noted that Inter failed to create dangerous situations in the second half and conceded a goal after switching to three forwards.

Inter's Draw Costs Serie A Lead

Inter increased their efforts after falling behind, but time was not on their side as they sought three points. The visitors took 16 shots but only managed to get two on target, resulting in a wasteful performance. "We had a great reaction after the goal, maybe we should have had it earlier," Inzaghi added. "In games like this, you have to try to unlock the result... If you stay tied and concede goals, games become difficult."

Argentine striker Lautaro Martinez had an early opportunity to give Inter the lead but missed his header just above the bar. Last season's Serie A top scorer with 24 goals has yet to score this season. Inzaghi explained that Martinez faced some training issues: "He had a little problem, he couldn't train a lot." The coach also mentioned that Joaquin Correa was the only forward available for training in the last ten days.

Inzaghi reflected on Inter's defensive performance and previous matches. "The team was a bit slow but until [conceding] the goal [Yann] Sommer had no work," he said. He accepted Mota's goal more than those conceded on the first match day and felt overall defensively they performed well.

Upcoming Champions League Campaign

Inter began their season with a 2-2 draw at Genoa before securing consecutive home wins against Lecce and Atalanta without conceding any goals. They are set to start their Champions League campaign with an away match against Manchester City on Wednesday.

"I'm quite calm," Inzaghi assured. "I have all the players available, and this new Champions League is something new for all of us coaches." He highlighted that this year's format includes two additional games without the usual group stage and emphasised the importance of performing well against any opponent in the competition.

The draw against Monza leaves Inter needing to regroup quickly as they prepare for their European challenge. With all players available and lessons learned from recent matches, Inzaghi remains optimistic about their upcoming fixtures.
