Intercontinental Cup 2024: India Finish Last in Tournament After Losing to Syria in Decider

By MyKhel Staff

India's hopes of securing the Intercontinental Cup 2024 were dashed as they fell to a 0-3 defeat against a dominant Syrian side in the tournament's decider. The loss saw India finish last in the competition, while Syria lifted the trophy in commanding fashion.

Despite moments of promise, the Blue Tigers were unable to capitalise on their chances, with Syria capitalising on key opportunities to seal the win. Syria's dominance was evident from the early minutes of the game, starting with a goal in the 6th minute by Mahmoud Alaswad, which set the tone for the rest of the encounter.

India vs Syria Intercontinental Cup 2024

India struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, with their attacking efforts often falling short. Despite some promising moves around the 20-minute mark, they failed to convert those chances into goals. Syria, on the other hand, was relentless in their attacks, and although India grew into the game, they couldn't break through the solid Syrian defense. The first half ended with India trailing 0-1.

The second half saw a more energized Indian side. The introduction of fresh legs, including Apuia and Asish Rai, provided a much-needed boost. India began to press higher up the field, creating more opportunities, but the finishing touch was absent. A few close calls, such as Liston Colaco's thunderous shot that rattled the crossbar in stoppage time, highlighted India's frustration in front of the goal.

Syria, however, capitalized on India's inability to finish. In the 75th minute, Daleho Mohsen Irandust extended Syria's lead to 2-0 with a well-executed solo effort after receiving a long ball from Sabbag. Despite India's persistent attempts to fight back, Syria remained defensively solid, and the match seemed out of reach.

As the clock ticked down, India continued to push forward but left gaps at the back. In the dying moments of the match, Pablo Sabbag added a third goal for Syria, sealing a comprehensive victory for his side. The final whistle blew with Syria celebrating a 3-0 triumph, lifting the Intercontinental Cup trophy.

India, though valiant in their efforts, were left to rue missed opportunities and moments of defensive lapses. This defeat highlights areas for improvement, particularly in converting chances and maintaining defensive solidity against counter-attacks. Despite the result, India's performance in patches showed potential as they prepare for future international fixtures.
