Simone Inzaghi Affirms Loyalty To Inter Players Following Dramatic Champions League Win Against Barcelona

Inter Milan triumphed over Barcelona to secure a spot in the Champions League final, with manager Simone Inzaghi expressing unwavering confidence in his squad. The thrilling first leg ended 3-3, setting high expectations for the return match at San Siro. The teams delivered an even more intense contest, with Inter emerging victorious 4-3 after extra time.

Lautaro Martinez and Hakan Calhanoglu gave Inter a 2-0 lead, but Barcelona fought back to go ahead 3-2 with just minutes left. Francesco Acerbi equalised in stoppage time, and Davide Frattesi scored the decisive goal in extra time, igniting celebrations among Inter fans. "First of all, we must also congratulate Barcelona, a really strong team," Inzaghi told Sky Sports in Italy.

Inzaghi praised his players for their exceptional performances against Barcelona. "It took a super Inter, applause for these guys, two monstrous performances were put on the pitch," he said. He expressed pride in coaching such a dedicated team and felt they deserved their success at San Siro.

Under Inzaghi's leadership since 2021/22, Inter have reached the Champions League final twice in four seasons, matching Real Madrid's record during this period. This achievement highlights their consistent performance on Europe's biggest stage.

This season marks Inter's second final appearance in three years; they previously lost to Manchester City in 2023. Their journey included overcoming one of the highest-scoring semi-final ties ever recorded alongside Liverpool's 7-6 aggregate win over Roma in 2017-18.

"We had some problems, but with our hearts we went beyond every obstacle," Inzaghi stated. He emphasised teamwork and sacrifice as key factors that helped them execute their strategy effectively after the first leg.

Praise for Barcelona's Talent

Inzaghi acknowledged Barcelona's talent, particularly highlighting Frenkie De Jong alongside young star Lamine Yamal. "There has been a lot of talk about Yamal; I have seen another extraordinary player who is (Frenkie) De Jong," he noted. Despite recognising these talents, Inzaghi affirmed his loyalty to his own players.

The hero of San Siro was Davide Frattesi, who also scored a crucial winner against Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals. Reflecting on his performance, Frattesi said: "It's incredible; I don't know what to say." His determination and belief played a significant role in Inter's success.

Frattesi added that despite coming off the bench, he felt like he had played the entire match due to his emotional involvement. His contributions were vital as Inter secured their place in yet another Champions League final.
