Delhi Capitals (DC), a team that has been part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since its inception, has yet to clinch the coveted title. As the IPL 2025 auction approaches, DC is poised to make strategic moves to strengthen their squad, with pace bowling sensation Umran Malik emerging as a prime target.

DC’s best IPL performance came in the 2020 season when they finished as runners-up to the Mumbai Indians. However, the 2024 season saw them grappling with inconsistency, finishing sixth in the group stage points table with a balanced record of seven wins and seven losses. The primary area of concern was their bowling attack, which failed to keep the opposition in check, resulting in an economy rate of 9.93, the second worst of the season.

While individual performances from bowlers like Khaleel Ahmed and Mukesh Kumar were commendable, each claiming 17 wickets, there was a lack of overall efficiency. Ahmed managed an economy rate of 8.87 in the powerplay, picking up eight crucial wickets, while Mukesh Kumar, despite his wicket-taking ability with 17 scalps, had an expensive economy of 10.37.

According to recent reports, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are set to release Malik ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. This presents a golden opportunity for DC to bolster their bowling arsenal. Since making his IPL debut in 2021 as a short-term replacement for T Natarajan during the UAE leg of the season, the 24-year-old has shown remarkable talent.

His impressive performances caught the attention of the 2016 champions, who decided to retain him for INR 4 crore, considering that he had been making waves with his raw speed and bounce. In the 2022 season, he did superbly well, pocketing 22 wickets in 14 matches. However, his form dipped in the following seasons.

In IPL 2023, he played just eight matches, managing only five wickets with an average of 43.40 and an economy rate of 10.85 and in the subsequent season, he played just one game before he warmed up the bench for the entire season.

However, with his knack for picking up wickets at crucial junctures and clocking fierce speeds, Umran Malik can be the spearhead DC needs. He can lead the pace attack by example and intimidate batsmen in both the powerplay and death overs. Given his age and potential, signing him could be a long-term investment for DC.

The Delhi-based franchise must have been aware of their bowling weaknesses. They can address with such a strategic buy like Umran Malik, if he's released by SRH. If DC manage to pen the Jammu and Kashmir-born cricketer's signature, they surely can set themselves up for a successful IPL 2025 campaign, potentially changing the narrative of their voyage.
