Ipswich Town Draw With Southampton Keeps Promotion Hopes Alive, Says McKenna

Ipswich Town moved a step closer to automatic promotion after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Southampton, leaving Kieran McKenna’s team knowing victory over Queens Park Rangers on the final day will confirm a Premier League return, with the Tractor Boys holding a slender advantage over Millwall and Middlesbrough in the Championship table.

The Opta supercomputer now gives Ipswich a 74.5% chance of going up alongside champions Coventry City, reflecting the strong position created by the result at St. Mary’s, where substitute Jack Clarke struck an 87th-minute equaliser that kept promotion hopes under Ipswich’s control despite Southampton twice fighting back.

Ipswich draw keeps promotion hopes alive

McKenna’s side sit one point ahead of third-placed Millwall and two clear of Middlesbrough, while all three clubs are already guaranteed at least a play-off place, leaving Wrexham, Hull City and Derby County to contest the final top-six position as the Championship promotion race heads towards a tense final round of fixtures.

Southampton’s draw ended any chance of securing automatic promotion, yet confirmed a play-off berth and extended Tonda Eckert’s impressive league sequence, with Southampton now unbeaten in 18 Championship matches, winning 13 and drawing five during a run that underlines consistent form despite the disappointment over missing the top two.

The match turned several times after a goalless first half, with Wes Burns firing Ipswich ahead early in the second period, before Ryan Manning levelled 10 minutes later through a deflected free-kick from the edge of the penalty area, which wrong-footed the defence and shifted momentum towards the home side.

Southampton then appeared on course for a vital win when Cyle Larin put Eckert’s team 2-1 up in the 80th minute, but Clarke came off the bench to curl a precise finish into the bottom-left corner, and Ipswich almost completed the turnaround in stoppage time, only for Daniel Peretz to produce an outstanding save.

Ipswich Town promotion push praised by Kieran McKenna

McKenna was full of admiration for the level of performance his squad produced under intense pressure, highlighting the quality of both sides and the stage of the season, while also pointing to the significance of earning a result away to a team in such strong domestic form at this crucial point.

"I thought it was an outstanding game of football, one of the best certainly in my time here, certainly in the Championship," McKenna said. "I loved our performance, to be honest. To do that at this stage of the season here with the form they're in, I think is a great sign for where we're at as a group."

Clarke almost became the decisive figure again in added time when a rising effort seemed destined for the top corner, which would have virtually sealed promotion given Ipswich’s superior goal difference, but Peretz stretched to turn the strike away, leaving McKenna reflecting on just how close his squad came to finishing the job.

"You probably can't come much closer to getting promoted than we were at the end," McKenna added. "It was a matter of inches from the ball going in the net, but I loved where we were at, and I am looking forward to Saturday now."

Ipswich Town promotion scenario and Southampton play-off focus

For Southampton, attention now fully shifts to preparing for the play-offs after the disappointment of losing automatic promotion hopes, with the response at St. Mary’s following the FA Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester City, when Nico Gonzalez’s 87th-minute goal decided the tie, showing resilience and commitment across competitions.

Eckert drew encouragement from the effort levels and spectacle, while stressing that both promotion-chasing sides faced similar pressure. "It's crunch time now and that's not just for us, it's the same for Ipswich, but you have just seen the dedication, and we tried everything to win the game of football," Eckert said. "We have clarity now, and we need to get ready for the play-offs. I would have enjoyed the game if we got the three points, but if you want to make an advertisement for the Championship, I think that was the game to watch."

With Ipswich, Millwall and Middlesbrough all assured of at least extending their seasons and Southampton locked into the play-offs after an 18-match unbeaten league stretch, focus now rests on whether McKenna’s team can finish the job against Queens Park Rangers and secure a rapid Premier League return from this strong Championship position.
