Iran-Egypt World Cup 2026: VAR Denies Khalilzadeh's Late Winner In Stoppage Chaos

Video review denied Iran a famous late winner as Shoja Khalilzadeh’s stoppage‑time strike was ruled offside in a 1-1 draw with Egypt at Seattle Stadium. The result leaves Iran waiting to discover if four points will secure a round of 32 place, while Egypt advance from Group G in second.

The drama peaked in the 93rd minute when Mostafa Shobeir sliced a clearance and Khalilzadeh forced the rebound over the line. Iran supporters celebrated wildly, sensing both victory and second place, but VAR showed part of Khalilzadeh’s boot was marginally ahead of the last defender during the phase.

That decision means Egypt now face Australia in Dallas in the round of 32, having surrendered top spot in Group G to Belgium, who defeated New Zealand 5-1. Iran, despite remaining unbeaten across three matches, must rely on other results to confirm qualification as one of the best third‑placed teams.

Iran’s performance statistics underline how close the team came to progressing on the night. The side recorded an expected goals figure of 1.94, the highest xG total in Iran’s World Cup history, surpassing the 1.88 registered against the United States in 1998. Saeid Ezatolahi even headed against the crossbar deep into added time.

The contest had already delivered plenty before the late controversy. Egypt struck first after only five minutes when Mahmoud Saber’s low effort slipped under Alireza Beiranvand. Iran responded quickly, equalising in the 14th minute as Ramin Rezaeian drilled in from a narrow angle after Shobeir parried Milad Mohammadi’s initial shot.

Those early efforts produced historic milestones for both nations. Egypt’s opener at 4 minutes 26 seconds and Iran’s response at 13 minutes 13 seconds stand as each country’s fastest World Cup goals. The fast start helped shape an intense contest, with chances at both ends before the match tightened in the second half.

Before Iran’s leveller, the team had already missed a major chance to hit back. Mohamed Abdelmonem fouled Mehdi Taremi inside the penalty area, handing Iran a spot‑kick. Taremi, the captain, took responsibility, yet Shobeir guessed correctly and dived to his right to push away the penalty and preserve Egypt’s early lead.

Egypt’s attacking threat faded after the interval, especially once Mohamed Salah left the field shortly before the hour mark. Television pictures showed an ice pack on Salah’s left leg while on the bench. The 57 minutes played marked Salah’s shortest outing in a World Cup match, below the 76 minutes recorded against Belgium earlier in this tournament.

With Salah off, Egypt retreated deeper and Iran pushed forward in search of a winner. Taremi almost provided it when a glancing header clipped the outside of the post. The pressure steadily built, and Egypt’s display looked flat, with Hossam Hassan’s side appearing vulnerable to the late surge before VAR intervened.

Iran’s campaign still carries historical significance even with the uncertainty. Iran are just the third Asian team to complete a World Cup group stage unbeaten, alongside Japan in 2002 and 2026, and South Korea in 2002. Whether that record also brings progress to the knockout rounds now depends on other group results elsewhere.
