Iraq Secure 2026 World Cup Berth With 2-1 Victory Over Bolivia

Iraq claimed the final place at the 2026 World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Bolivia in the inter-confederation play-off, as Aymen Hussein struck the decisive goal. The result ended Iraq’s 40-year absence from the tournament, last reached at Mexico 1986.

The winner arrived on 53 minutes, when Hussein met Marko Farji’s precise cross with a first-time finish that beat goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra. That strike restored Iraq’s lead and proved enough, despite late pressure from Bolivia in the closing stages.

Iraq secure 2026 World Cup berth

Iraq had already moved ahead early. After nine minutes, Amir Al Ammari forced Viscarra into a superb save, as a swerving free-kick seemed destined for the top corner before being tipped onto the bar. From the resulting corner, Al Ammari’s delivery found Ali Al Hamadi, who headed in.

Bolivia responded before half-time and levelled in the 38th minute. Moises Paniagua drifted free on the left side of the penalty area and curled a composed finish beyond Ahmed Basil. Soon after, Ramiro Vaca tried to threaten from a free-kick, but Basil gathered the attempt without difficulty.

Iraq almost extended the lead with nine minutes left. Mohanad Ali broke into space but sent a powerful effort over the bar. Bolivia then went close deep into stoppage time, when Fernando Nava drove a shot from a tight angle, yet Basil reacted sharply to block.

The play-off featured contrasting attacking returns. Iraq scored twice from three shots on target, registering 0.75 expected goals from seven attempts. Bolivia produced 16 shots and hit the target seven times, yet their opportunities added up to only 0.84 expected goals across the match.

That efficiency allowed Iraq to edge a tight contest and secure qualification as the final team confirmed for this summer’s World Cup. The victory confirmed a long-awaited return to the global stage, rewarding a disciplined display in both penalty areas against persistent Bolivian pressure.
