Japan and Iraq will face off in the biggest match of Group D of the AFC Asian Group on Friday (January 19) as the winner will seal their place early in the last 16 of the tournament.

Japan come into the game surviving a scare against Vietnam as they recovered from 1-2 down to a 4-2 win while Iraq saw off a spirited Indonesia with a 3-1 win after the South Asian side made things difficult for them.

This team responded effectively to an equalizer from Indonesia by scoring a late goal in first-half stoppage time to flip the tide in their favour. It was also their first victory of the year. Iraq has scored three goals or more in three of their previous four Asian Cup group matches, suggesting that they are playing at their most aggressive level in this tournament's group stage.

Since the beginning of September, Jesus Casas has only witnessed his team's one loss in regular time 1-0 loss in a friendly match against South Korea earlier this year. Iraq has only failed to go past the Asian Cup knockout round once in their history, as they placed last in their group in 1972.

If they win on Friday, they have a decent chance of qualifying for this tournament's knockout stage for the eighth time in a row. This would also give them the advantage of finishing first in their group, something this country hasn't done since the 2007 Asian Cup.

Japan's first-half performance was underwhelming for forty-five minutes, but a late burst of goals at the end of the half gave them confidence going into halftime. Four years prior, the Japanese found themselves in a similar situation as they trailed their first Asian Cup group match in 2019 before defeating Turkmenistan (3-2) with three consecutive goals in the second half.

They have been brilliant offensively throughout, scoring four goals or more ten times, with a total of twenty goals in their previous four games. The last Asian Cup group stage defeat for the Samurai Blue dates back to 2011, when they played to a 1-1 tie with Jordan. Since then, they have won 12 of their previous 13 Asian Cup group-stage encounters.

Even further back in antiquity, Japan's only two Asian Cup victories over Iraq were by a combined score of 5-1; their most recent loss was at the 1982 Asian Games, where they were defeated 1-0.
