Eddie Howe reflected on Alexander Isak's journey at Newcastle United since his record-breaking transfer from Real Sociedad in 2022. The Swedish forward joined the Magpies for a reported £63 million, surpassing the previous club record set by Joelinton's move from Hoffenheim in 2019. Isak has since made a significant impact, scoring his 50th goal in Newcastle's recent 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg.
Isak's performance this season has been remarkable, with 13 goals in 18 Premier League matches. Only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have scored more, with 16 and 18 goals respectively. His consistent scoring streak of seven consecutive top-flight games places him alongside Newcastle legends Alan Shearer and Joe Willock. At 25, Isak has justified his hefty price tag, proving to be a valuable asset for the team.

Howe acknowledged the challenges associated with such a significant transfer fee. "The transfer fee is always a difficult one," he stated. "If you look at the fee alone, especially for me with my background, it's such a lot of money and I think I'm not sure if you can commit to that." Despite initial doubts about new signings, Howe was confident in Isak's abilities after observing him closely.
Isak has missed only three games this season due to a toe injury sustained in late September. As Newcastle prepares to face Bromley in the FA Cup third round, Howe mentioned that Isak would likely be rested ahead of their Premier League match against Wolves on Wednesday. "We think he's pretty good," Howe said regarding Isak's current condition.
"He is seeing his physio at the moment," Howe continued. "I've given him a couple of days' rest, but he is in a good place and will report back tomorrow [when] I will have a good look at him." The initial assessments suggest that Isak's injury isn't serious, allowing him time to recover before upcoming fixtures.
Howe expressed his admiration for Isak's qualities, stating, "Having watched him a lot, he was outstanding, and I loved everything about him." The manager highlighted the positive atmosphere Isak brings to the team: "There's a lovely feeling when he comes through the doors, and you are still in love with him after a few days of working together."
Newcastle United aims to maintain their momentum as they navigate through various competitions. With Isak's impressive form and strategic management of player fitness by Howe, the team looks poised for continued success this season.
