ISL 2017: English winger Carl Baker signs for ATK

Baker who is considered a legend of English side Southport left his previous club Portsmouth by mutual consent a week ago, and eventually signed for ISL club ATK.

Bengaluru, September 5: Two times Indian Super League champion ATK have completed the signing of English attacking midfielder Carl Baker for the upcoming edition of the tournament.

Baker who is considered a legend of English side Southport left his previous club Portsmouth by mutual consent a week ago, after playing a key part in helping the side gain promotion from League two.

The 34-year-old will now be supervised by former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Teddy Sheringham who was appointed as the head coach earlier and will play with another Premier league legend attacker Robbie Keane who left La Galaxy to come to India. The English winger who can also operate from midfield arrived to ATK as a free agent.

"I am sure his experience of playing top tier leagues in England will help ATK in the forthcoming season. We are already on our way to consolidate our team and the coaching staff is making some worthy choices to form a strong side," team principal owner Sanjiv Goenka said welcoming Baker.



Baker is an academy product of Liverpool who mostly spent his professional careerin the English Championship and League One, most notably at Southport and Coventry City among the few.

He has appeared in more than 500 games in English football and has scored 97 goals in the mean time and it will be the first time the English veteran will be stepping outside England to experience a different challenge.

"It feels great to sign for a champion side like ATK. I am eager to experience Indian football which is going through some exciting times with ISL gaining popularity," Baker said on the move.

"I have heard about the fans who are passionate about this beautiful game and hopefully I can give them enough reasons to rejoice by the end of the season."
