East Bengal midfielder Souvik Chakrabarti will miss the club's upcoming match in ISL 2023-24 against NorthEast Unite. The midfielder has confirmed that he will play no role in the away match in Guwahati on February 9.
Souvik Chakrabarti was absent from the Kolkata derby. He was on four yellow cards which would have led him to missing their next ISL 2023-24 match which was the Kolkata derby. However, Souvik also received a red card in the Kalinga Super Cup final.

It was unclear which of the two became the reason why Souvik had to miss the match. However, as East Bengal management came to know that the red card was the reason, it seems, they are somewhat flabbergasted.
Souvik is training with the senior team and on Sunday he answered the media’s questions on how he feels about this matter. “I only found out about it a while ago. I will be discussing this matter with the management,” he told AajTak Bangla.
When East Bengal management was asked about this matter, they said, “We do not understand this strange rule. Souvik had already received four yellow cards in the ISL when he went to play in the Super Cup.
“In that case, he should not have been allowed to play in the Super Cup from the beginning, but that didn't happen. After the schedule was released, we knew that Souvik would not be able to play the first ISL derby due to the cards.
“But now we're hearing, he will not even be able to play in the next match against Northeast United due to the two yellow cards that turned into a red card against Odisha in the Super Cup final.
“How does one competition’s card apply to another competition? Then Souvik should not have been allowed to play in the first match of the Super Cup. We have never heard of such a strange rule before.”
Both the Super Cup and Indian Super League are registered under the All India Football Federation. Hence, it is possible that the cards from one tournament can apply to another. However, it certainly was unprecedented to see that Souvik will have to miss two matches.
