East Bengal returned to winning ways in the Indian Super League (ISL) with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Northeast United on Monday (December 4) at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.

This also becomes the biggest victory in ISL for East Bengal and the Kolkata giants secure their second victory of this season.

It was a fantastic night for the home side which kickstarted by a powerful strike from Borja Herrera in the 14th minute. The lead was doubled quickly as Cleiton Silva scored with a glancing header.

After the break, the duo Nandha Kumar and Naorem Mahesh combined to bring further agony to the Highlanders. The remarkable brace of Nandha was aided by Mahesh, while Cleiton chipped in with his second goal finalizing the score with a simple finish. East Bengal, on the other hand, had their spirits boosted by a clean sheet, their first since their opening match against Jamshedpur in the current season.

A struggle for Northeast United in Kolkata

The Northeast team was left humiliated in Kolkata and is now faced with the challenge of recovering from this defeat as quickly as possible. In a further blow to their morale, Nestor Albiach missed a golden opportunity to score a consolation goal as his penalty kick ended up hitting the post.
