In a captivating clash of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24, Odisha FC showcased their defensive prowess to secure a narrow 1-0 win against NorthEast United FC at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The victory, on Friday (November 3) was a testament to the quick adaptation of Odisha FC to head coach Sergio Lobera's call for improved defensive discipline.

Prior to the match, Lobera emphasised the need for balance between attack and defense, as his team had been scoring many goals but also conceding at an alarming rate. This approach was a departure from their previous 3-2 comeback victory against Bengaluru FC.
The response from Odisha FC was resounding as they achieved only their second clean sheet of the season. This defensive resilience was atypical for Lobera's teams, which, on average, concede only 1.23 goals per game in the 85 ISL matches he has coached.
The center-back pairing of Narender Gahlot and Carlos Delgado played a pivotal role in limiting NorthEast United's goal-scoring opportunities, allowing the opponents only three shots on target.
Odisha's midfield duo of Ahmed Jahouh and Lalthathanga Khawlhring provided a strong shield for the defense. Jahouh, in particular, controlled the tempo with his tenacious defensive efforts and precise passing.
While Odisha held their defensive line, Brazilian striker Diego Mauricio applied relentless pressure on NorthEast United FC. In the 26th minute, Mirshad Michu denied Mauricio, but the determined forward forced Michu into a misplaced pass. Mauricio capitalised on this error, collecting the ball and slotting it past the goalkeeper to give Odisha the lead in the 37th minute.
NorthEast United FC's star, Parthib Gogoi, produced a remarkable effort in the 57th minute that came close to leveling the score. Despite one of his shots being blocked in the box, he regrouped and unleashed a powerful shot on target, only to be thwarted by a fully extended Amrinder Singh.
With this impressive save, Amrinder closed in on Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who holds the record for the most clean sheets by a goalkeeper in the ISL (40), trailing by just one compared to the Odisha FC custodian (39).
Ahmed Jahouh (Odisha FC): The Moroccan midfielder delivered a comprehensive performance in the heart of the midfield, boasting an 82% passing accuracy. He made seven clearances, two interceptions, and crosses, while also drawing a foul.
Odisha FC's next challenge will see them travel to face Jamshedpur FC on December 1 in the ISL. Meanwhile, the Highlanders, NorthEast United FC, will host Bengaluru FC on November 26 for their upcoming fixture in the league."
