By Neellohit Ray

The Indian Super League (ISL) will begin its tenth season on 21 September with a South India derby between Bengaluru FC and Kerala Blasters.

The ISL 2023-24 season will be unique in that it will feature a record 12 teams following the promotion of Punjab FC from India's second-tier football competition, the I-League, at the end of last season.

Kerala Blasters will face Sunil Chhetri's Bengaluru FC in the season opener on September 21 at Kochi's Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium, while champions Mohun Bagan Super Giants will face debutant Punjab FC at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium on September 23.

Punjab FC has signed Greek defender Dimitrios Chatziisaias for the 2023-24 season. The 30-year-old joins Punjab FC after previously playing for clubs in Greece, Turkey, and Belgium.

All ISL teams competed in the just ended Durand Cup 2023, in which Mohun Bagan defeated city rivals East Bengal in the final to win a record-breaking 17th trophy. Mohun Bagan are considered favourites to reclaim the ISL trophy after a record-breaking transfer season that saw the arrival of talented midfielders Sahal Abdul Samad and Anirudh Thapa.
