ISL 2024-25: East Bengal Fall Short in Thriller Against Mumbai City Ahead of Kolkata Derby

By MyKhel Staff

East Bengal FC suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat to Mumbai City FC in a high-octane Indian Super League (ISL) clash at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan. The Kolkata Giants lost the match despite showing resilience and mounting a second-half comeback.

The Kolkata-based side couldn't capitalise on their momentum, leaving them to rue missed opportunities just days before their highly anticipated Kolkata Derby against Mohun Bagan Super Giant.

East Bengal vs Mumbai City FC

The first half was a showcase of Mumbai City FC's attacking prowess. Lallianzuala Chhangte opened the scoring in the 39th minute with a clinical finish, capitalizing on a perfectly weighted through-ball from Brandon Fernandes. The Islanders doubled their lead just before the break when Nikolaos Karelis pounced on a rebound to slot the ball past East Bengal's keeper. Mumbai's sharp transitions and ability to exploit gaps in the home team's defense left the Red & Gold Brigade chasing shadows.

However, the second half belonged to East Bengal, who emerged with renewed vigour. A slice of fortune came their way in the 66th minute when Sahil Panwar inadvertently deflected a cross into his own net, cutting Mumbai's lead to one. The equalizer followed in the 83rd minute, with David Lalhlansanga finishing a well-worked corner routine that sent the home crowd into a frenzy.

Just as it seemed East Bengal had turned the tide, Mumbai City responded with precision. Nathan Rodrigues' pinpoint delivery in the 87th minute set up Karelis, who calmly netted his second goal of the evening, ensuring the Islanders walked away with all three points.

The defeat leaves East Bengal with questions to answer as they prepare for the Kolkata Derby. While their spirited second-half display offered glimpses of promise, defensive lapses and a lack of sharpness in the final third proved costly. For Mumbai City FC, the win marks a significant boost in their campaign, lifting them to fifth in the standings.

With the Kolkata Derby looming, East Bengal must regroup quickly to avoid a repeat of their defensive struggles. Meanwhile, Mumbai City will look to build on their momentum when they face Jamshedpur FC next.
