ISL 2024-25: Mohun Bagan drop points in goalless draw to Chennaiyin FC

By MyKhel Staff

ISL 2024-25: Chennaiyin FC frustrated table-toppers Mohun Bagan Super Giant in a hard-fought 0-0 draw at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai during the Indian Super League 2024-25 season.

Despite dominating possession at various stages, the Mariners failed to break down a resolute Chennaiyin defense, leaving them to share the spoils.

The hosts began with purpose, with Wilmar Jordan Gil and Connor Shields testing the Mohun Bagan defense. A notable moment came when Shields set up Gil for a shot that was heroically blocked by Tom Aldred. Gil later came agonizingly close to opening the scoring, hitting the post in the 35th minute following a cross from Shields.

Mohun Bagan gradually found their rhythm. Asish Rai and Greg Stewart started influencing proceedings, but their best first-half opportunity went begging when Suhail Bhat's solo effort struck the side netting.

The Mariners came out stronger after the break, with Dimitrios Petratos testing the Chennaiyin defense from a dangerous free kick. However, Petratos lacked the composure to capitalize on subsequent opportunities. Chennaiyin's defense, led by Elsinho, remained solid, denying Mohun Bagan clear-cut chances.

A pivotal moment occurred in the 60th minute when Vignesh Dakshinamurthy limped off, forcing a tactical adjustment for Chennaiyin. Despite Mohun Bagan's introduction of attacking options like Liston Colaco, Manvir Singh, and Jamie Maclaren, they struggled to find the decisive breakthrough.

The final minutes saw Chennaiyin nearly snatch a victory. Shields delivered a precise ball to Ryan Edwards, whose header, however, sailed wide. Mohun Bagan's backline, anchored by Aldred, stood firm under late pressure, ensuring the match ended in a goalless draw.

Connor Shields shone for Chennaiyin, crafting four chances and delivering nine crosses. His tireless performance exemplified Chennaiyin's fighting spirit against formidable opposition.

Chennaiyin FC, sitting 10th with 18 points from 17 matches, next face FC Goa on January 25. Mohun Bagan, atop the table with 37 points, will host Bengaluru FC on January 27 as they look to return to winning ways.
