ISL 2024-25: Mumbai City FC had to rely on Nikolaos Karelis' brilliance to secure a 1-1 draw against Punjab FC in an intense Indian Super League (ISL) clash at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi.
The game was marked by contrasting styles, with Mumbai dominating possession (60.8%) while Punjab FC created more threatening chances. The first significant moment came in the 14th minute when Brandon Fernandes delivered a precise corner kick aimed at Karelis.

The striker, unmarked at the near post, struck the crossbar, narrowly missing an early lead for the visitors. Punjab FC capitalised on a counterattack during the first half of the stoppage. Luka Majcen initiated the move, combining effectively with Asmir Suljic. Suljic's perfectly timed through ball allowed Majcen to finish clinically into the bottom right corner, putting the hosts ahead 1-0 at halftime.
Mumbai City FC responded with determination in the second half. In the 58th minute, Vikram Partap Singh's control on the right flank set the stage for a well-orchestrated attack. Singh laid the ball off for Yoell van Nieff, who found Karelis at the edge of the box. The Greek forward displayed exceptional skill, turning sharply and firing a low shot past the goalkeeper to level the score.
Both teams had chances to snatch the win. Jayesh Rane came close for Mumbai with a powerful strike that grazed past the post. Punjab FC's Nihal Sudheesh tested TP Rehenesh with a well-placed shot, but the Mumbai goalkeeper was equal to the task. Meanwhile, Brandon Fernandes continued to impress with his deliveries, setting up opportunities that lacked the finishing touch.
In the dying moments, Mumbai attempted a counterattack, but Yoell van Nieff's long-range effort sailed wide, leaving both teams to share the spoils. Mumbai City FC will face Mohammedan SC on January 26, while Punjab FC take on Jamshedpur FC on January 28.
Brief Scores: Punjab FC 1 (Luka Majcen 45+1') drew with Mumbai City FC 1 (Nikolaos Karelis 58').
