ISL 2024-25: Khaiminthang Lhungdim's late strike ensured Punjab FC secured a crucial point against NorthEast United FC, drawing 1-1 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati.

The equaliser came in the 82nd minute, halting Punjab's four-match losing streak in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season.

The match started with NorthEast United taking control, creating early opportunities. Jithin MS, their key playmaker, missed a golden chance in the opening half-hour, heading wide from close range. However, persistence paid off in the 24th minute when Alaaeddine Ajaraie capitalised on a defensive clearance error. Macarton Nickson's long-range strike forced a save from Punjab goalkeeper Muheet Shabir Khan, but the rebound fell perfectly for Ajaraie, who slotted it into the bottom corner to give the hosts the lead.

In the second half, Punjab FC upped their intensity, with Nihal Sudheesh and Filip Mrzljak attempting to penetrate the Highlanders' defense. A critical moment came in the 50th minute when Luka Majcen's effort was saved by NorthEast's Gurmeet Singh. Despite increased pressure, Punjab FC struggled to find the back of the net until late in the game.

The introduction of Muhammad Suhail in the 75th minute proved pivotal. Suhail's pace and energy unsettled the NorthEast defense, culminating in a crucial moment seven minutes later. Suhail's shot from the left flank forced a diving save from Gurmeet, but the ball deflected to Lhungdim, who calmly finished with precision, curling the ball into the bottom corner to level the score.

The match ended with drama as Lhungdim received a second yellow card soon after his goal, leaving Punjab to defend with ten players. NorthEast pressed hard for a winner, with Filip Mrzljak coming close in added time, but his free-kick sailed just wide of the target.

With this result, NorthEast United FC remain mid-table, while Punjab FC gain a much-needed morale boost ahead of their upcoming fixtures.
