ISL 2025-26 Season on Hold; AIFF breaks silence after FSDL announces Postponement, vows to 'do all things to ensure ISL'

By MyKhel Staff

The future of the Indian Super League (ISL) has been thrown into uncertainty after Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the league's commercial partner, announced its inability to proceed with the upcoming season.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has now issued a detailed statement explaining the situation and assuring stakeholders that they are working towards a resolution.

ISL 2025-26 Season on Hold AIFF breaks silence after FSDL announces Postponement vows to do all things to ensure ISL

Why Was the ISL Postponed?

The postponement stems from unresolved negotiations over the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement between AIFF and FSDL, which governs the commercial and organizational rights of the ISL. The issue escalated after the Supreme Court of India intervened, instructing that the renewal process should be paused until further notice.

Timeline of Events

November 21, 2024: AIFF initiated negotiations for the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement with FSDL.

February 5, 2025 & March 5, 2025: Senior representatives from both organizations met in New Delhi and Mumbai to discuss renewal terms.

March 5, 2025: FSDL submitted a proposal for renewal.

April 21, 2025: AIFF responded with a counter-proposal.

April 26, 2025: During a hearing, the Supreme Court of India observed that "the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement should not be done until its order."

July 2025: FSDL announced its inability to proceed with the ISL season due to the lack of contractual clarity.

AIFF's Official Statement

AIFF has acknowledged the impact of this disruption on the football ecosystem in India, which includes clubs, players, officials, and fans. The federation emphasized its commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring the league's continuity, stating, "The AIFF and its stakeholders will take all possible steps and do all things within their power to ensure continuity of the ISL in the best interests of Indian football."

It also mentioned the order from the Supreme Court, which stated that no further talks between FSDL and AIFF for the renewal of the Master Agreement. The aforementioned timeline was also mentioned by AIFF, which further clarifies the ongoing issue between the two entities.

The ISL is the top-tier football league in India, and its postponement affects clubs, players, staff, officials, and millions of fans. While the ISL remains on hold, AIFF has requested understanding from all stakeholders during this interim period.

The future of the league now hinges on the Supreme Court's forthcoming decision, with hopes that clarity will soon be restored to India's premier football competition.
