
Bengaluru, November 27: The Chennai Police arrested two people on Sunday (November 26) in connection with the case of racial abuse and sexual harasment of a few NorthEast United FC fans during an Indian Super League game in Chennai.
A video of a fan dancing around a few NEUFC fans had gone viral during Chennaiyin FC's 3-0 win over NorthEast United FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium last week. The fan is alleged to have made racial remarks on the women surrounding
Since the incident, many players and pundits have voiced against this unfortunate incident including Chennaiyin FC star Jeje who himself belong from Mizoram.
NorthEast United FC co-owner John Abraham had said he was deeply disturbed by the incident. Meanwhile, Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju said that he was looking into the case closely.
Chennaiyin FC also also condemned the incident, saying that they are against racism and will take strong action against the culprits.
The two fans, Tamilchelvan and Karthik have been arrested by Tamil Nadu police under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment of Women Act.
Tamilchelvan, the main accused, who is a painter, was seen dancing in an obscene manner in front of a NorthEast group which consisted of three women.
He was seen targeting the women in the group and it can also be seen that one of the women pushed Tamilchelvan away.
The second accused, Karthik, is an engineering student and can be seen encouraging Tamilchelvan in the video. The accused have been remanded to 15 days of judicial custody.
Strict action must be taken against the fans who have been accused by racism as it is the biggest curse to Football and we must ensure that such things do not repeat in future.
