Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has refused to blame the Reds' owners Fenway Sports Group for their struggles this campaign. The Merseyside giants have endured a season to forget this time out and are languishing at the tenth position in the table right now.
While Liverpool fans have never been truly and entirely fond of Fenway Sports Group as their owners till date, Jamie Carragher has refused to blame the American owners solely for the club's tough times.
The former Liverpool defender has claimed that Liverpool coaching staff, recruitment team and players all need to take the blame for such a sudden and abrupt dip in form. He told Sky Sports, as quoted by The Liverpool Echo:
"A lot of people are looking at the ownership. What's happening right now, I do not blame FSG one bit for that. I don't. I will now get criticised by certain sections of the supporters for being an apologist for the ownership. I've got no job at Liverpool. I don't know no (sic) owner at Liverpool."
"There's been no ex-players that's ever been more critical of this ownership than me, in terms of ticket prices, furloughing staff and the Super League. But you have to look at it properly and say this, for me, is down to the staff and the players and the recruitment team," Carragher added.
FSG have owned Liverpool for more than 12 years now from Hicks and Gillett who left the club in a devastating situation physically. The American owners deserve the plaudits for reducing their club's huge debts and stabilizing the club. However, it also cannot be overlooked that FSG have spent anywhere near their rivals during their time at the club.
They have rather deployed a sell-to-buy model in order to keep the club sustainable. A majority of the Liverpool fans have blamed FSG for the club's struggles but it won't be fair to put the blame on them entirely.
