Jamshedpur FC and an Unceremonious Exit: How Rising Losses, Unsustainable ISL Model Ended a Dream

Jamshedpur FC recently confirmed it will not participate in the competition from the 2026-27 season onward, ending its nine-year run in India's top-flight football.

The Tata Steel-owned club and 2022 Indian Super League (ISL) Shield winners, created shockwaves across the nation.

The decision followed the club's failure to pay the first instalment of the mandatory participation fee, ₹55 lakh of a total ₹1.1 crore administrative fee, by the AIFF's extended deadline of 31 July 2026, under the league's new club-led commercial framework.

In a letter to the AIFF, club CEO Mukul Choudhari explained the core issue: "The decision to exit ISL is primarily due to the inability of JFSPL (Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited) to generate cash flows for running the club."

Shareholders indicated they could no longer commit significant funding or sponsorship, viewing the current ISL business model as "structurally financially unviable for the foreseeable future."

Founded in 2017, the Red Miners were notable for owning their stadium and training facilities. The club stated that JFSPL will continue promoting football at the grassroots level and developing young talent. Existing contracts with players and staff, including coach Owen Coyle, are expected to be honoured.

The players, who are currently in Ranchi, made a desperate plea to the TATA group. They released a video message and urged the management to reconsider their decision. But what is the reason behind this drastic decision? Was the writing already on the wall?

If we are to dissect this sudden demise of the club, it was not a sudden one at all. The club, which was a happy place for Ratan Tata, has gone into oblivion now, but the mechanism behind it is an old one. Despite having a strong connection with the local fans, Jamshedpur FC always had the issue.

The club was extremely well run, and the players and staff never had any major issues. A former player of the club told MyKhel on condition of anonymity that the club never made any late payments and was always cordial with the players.

"Payment was never an issue. They took care of us so well. The players were treated just the way one is supposed to," he said.

What led to Jamshedpur FC's Demise?

In Jamshedpur, they had their own accommodation facility for the players called Flatlets, which had everything required for a modern-day football club. It had chefs for food, a gym for strength and conditioning, a nearby practice ground for training - everything in a single boundary. Everything was taken care of for the players.

The recent operating losses for the club, which are around ₹11 crore over the prior two years, haven't been recuperated at all. Also, with the demise of the FSDL-AIFF deal for ISL, the revenue has further shrunk. With all of these expenses, it was becoming untenable for the club owners to run the club. The vast mismanagement and uncertainty last season played its part as well.

For clubs with a bigger fan base, the other sponsorship deals have somehow aided the economic part. For JFC, it hasn't been the case. A high budget for maintenance with low cash flow created a significant gap in the books for some time, which was never recovered.

At the end of last season, JFC were among the clubs with financial issues. As this season approached, the club found the bills out of their reach. The participation fee of ISL was an even bigger blow; with a ₹1.1 crore payment imminent, they had no way out.

MyKhel approached a top JFC official, who said he was hurt by the club's demise and declined to comment further. The club has said it will continue grassroots and youth development work (including via the Tata Football Academy) and honour existing player and staff contracts.

What is the immediate Aftermath?

With the club deciding to quit, it has put the players and staff under immense trouble. All of the JFC players will find themselves as free agent after this Durand Cup. Many players are supposed to join another club with the transfer window still open, while the future of the staff remains in the dark.
