Japan had been dominating the tournament since June 2023, but their 11-match winning streak across all competitions came to an end when they were humiliated by Iraq in their most recent meeting.
They lost 3-0 to Qatar in Doha during their first group stage loss at this event in 1988, and they lost there once more on Friday, more than 35 years later. In addition, Japan's last consecutive Asian Cup finals defeat was in 1988. Should they lose this match, they could be the first team to miss the tournament's knockout round since then.
