Four-time champions Japan will open their campaign against a spirited Vietnam in the opening Group D match at the Al Thummama Stadium in Doha on Sunday (January 14).
Japan enter the tournament as the highest ranking team (World No. 17) and will be looking to win their first AFC Asian Cup title since 2011 as Australia and Qatar won the previous two editions. The other Group D match takes place tomorrow between Iraq and Indonesia
Japan have a strong squad for tournament as coach Harime Moriyasu is spoilt for choices. Players such as Kyogo Furuhashi of Celtic and Ao Tanaka of Fortuna Dusseldorf, who both scored in the 2022 World Cup, are examples of the fight for spots in Japan's team.
Even with such a talented team, Hajime Moriyasu's goalkeepers-Daiya Maekawa, Taishi Nozawa, and Zion Suzuki-have only a combined total of five senior caps, which is unexpected given their lack of international experience. Despite an injury, Brighton & Hove Albion winger Kaoru Mitoma is part of the team, and Japan is hopeful that he will be healthy for the competition.
Vietnam, meanwhile, experienced a severe injury crisis prior to the AFC Asian Cup 2023 as players including Que Ngoc Hai, Nguyen Tien Linh, Dang Van Lam, Nguyen Thanh Chung, and Hoang Van Toan withdrew from the squad. Nguyen Hoang Duc, who made the Golden Star Warriors' 26-man roster, will undoubtedly miss this first game since he is currently healing from an ankle injury.
The Golden Star Warriors qualified for the continental competition for the second time in a row this year. In their first tournament, they made it to the quarterfinals before losing to their opponents in this particular game.
After Hang-seo Park's lengthy tenure as Vietnam's coach came to an end in March of last year, Philippe Troussier took over as manager and won his first three games in charge. But his team could not hold on to that momentum, losing five of their following six matches, including a midweek 2-1 loss to Kyrgyz Republic.
