Raul Jimenez Pays Tribute To Diogo Jota After Scoring In Gold Cup Final Against USA

Raul Jimenez honoured his late friend Diogo Jota by scoring in Mexico's Gold Cup final victory over the USA. His emotional tribute highlighted their strong bond.

Raul Jimenez honoured his late former teammate, Diogo Jota, after scoring in Mexico's Gold Cup final win against the United States. Jimenez equalised in the 27th minute at NRG Stadium, following Chris Richards' early goal for the USA. He displayed a Mexico shirt with Jota's name and number 20, replicating Jota's gaming celebration. Jota and his brother Andre Silva tragically died in a car accident in Spain last Thursday.

Jimenez wore a shirt with Jota's name during the national anthems before the match. The two were striking partners at Wolves from 2018 to 2020, contributing to consecutive seventh-place finishes in the Premier League under Nuno Espirito Santo. West Ham's Edson Alvarez secured Mexico's victory with a diving header 13 minutes before full-time. "He was a great friend, a great team-mate, this goal goes to him," Jimenez said of Jota. "I know that from up there, he will be very proud of this goal."

Jimenez Celebrates Jota in Gold Cup Final

Jimenez played a significant role when Mexico last defeated the USA in a Gold Cup final in 2019. He believes their latest triumph will boost confidence ahead of next year's home World Cup. "We started off slow but kept improving; it's an extra boost as we wrap up the summer before the World Cup," said Jimenez, who plays for Fulham. Winning this trophy could positively impact upcoming friendlies and the World Cup.

Coach Javier Aguirre shared similar views on Mexico's success. He noted their achievement as champions and highlighted their connection with fans both in the United States and Mexico. "One, we're champions. That's what we came for," Aguirre stated. "Two, it's about the connection with the fans. I see people fully engaged." He also mentioned how winning two trophies this year motivates them to continue training.

Aguirre emphasised that their recent victories give meaning to their efforts and build confidence for future challenges. "Three, I think we're starting to see the results of our training," he added. With these achievements, Mexico looks forward to maintaining momentum as they prepare for upcoming matches and events.

The emotional tribute by Jimenez highlights not only personal loss but also team spirit and determination. As they celebrate their victory, Mexico remains focused on future goals while honouring past connections that have shaped their journey so far.
