Joao Pedro Hat-Trick Seals Chelsea 4-1 Victory At Aston Villa

Chelsea rallied from behind to defeat Aston Villa 4-1 at Villa Park, led by Joao Pedro's hat-trick and an assist on Cole Palmer's goal. The Brazil forward's explosive performance sparked a first-half turnaround, with Palmer and Garnacho also contributing to a comprehensive away win.

Joao Pedro delivered a hat-trick and an assist as Chelsea overturned an early deficit to beat Aston Villa 4-1 at Villa Park, ending a three-match winless run in all competitions and handing Villa a rare home Premier League defeat after taking the lead.

The Brazil forward became the first player this Premier League season to be involved in four goals during one match, while also joining an elite group as the eighth Brazilian to hit a hat-trick in the competition, driving Chelsea’s dominant comeback against a Villa side managed by Liam Rosenior.

Pedro Hat-Trick Fires Chelsea Past Villa

Villa struck first after just one minute and 59 seconds, when Leon Bailey drilled a low cross that Ollie Watkins stepped over, allowing Douglas Luiz to guide a clever flick past Filip Jorgensen, who started in place of Robert Sanchez, giving the hosts both their quickest league goal this season and Chelsea’s earliest concession.

Chelsea reacted strongly to that early setback, with Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer forcing saves from Emiliano Martinez, before the equaliser arrived in the 35th minute as Malo Gusto sent a driven cross through the six-yard area and Joao Pedro stretched to steer the ball home from close range.

Villa thought Watkins had restored their advantage before half-time, but a VAR review ruled the effort offside, and Chelsea then completed the turnaround in stoppage time when Enzo Fernandez released Joao Pedro, who ran clear and clipped a composed finish over the advancing Martinez.

The pressure continued after the break and Chelsea moved 3-1 ahead in the 55th minute, when Martinez came for Reece James’ cross and his attempted clearance cannoned off Joao Pedro into the path of Palmer, who controlled the loose ball and drilled a firm strike from the edge of the penalty area.

The England forward then produced a precise through ball nine minutes later that split Villa’s back line, sending Alejandro Garnacho into space on the right, and Garnacho squared unselfishly across goal for Joao Pedro, who arrived centrally to tap in and complete a clinical hat-trick.

Garnacho went close to adding a fifth when a late attempt crept just wide, while at the other end substitute Tammy Abraham rose to meet a cross and saw a looping header come back off the crossbar, as Chelsea closed out a comfortable victory and ended Villa’s strong sequence when taking the lead at home.

Chelsea’s success continued a strong Premier League record at Villa Park, with 14 wins from 31 away league fixtures there, drawing eight and losing nine, and only Tottenham, with 17 home defeats, and Southampton, with 15, have lost more home games to Chelsea in the competition.

Joao Pedro’s display also had historical weight, as the three goals and one assist made the forward the first player in this Premier League campaign to directly contribute to four goals in a single match, while the treble confirmed Joao Pedro as the eighth Brazilian hat-trick scorer in the league’s history.

Luiz’s opener maintained a personal trend, as each of Luiz’s last 12 Premier League goals had all been scored at Villa Park, creating the longest such sequence by any player at the stadium in the competition and surpassing Dion Dublin’s previous record of 11 straight home league goals between November 1998 and September 1999.

Despite that milestone and Villa’s early control, the defeat meant Villa lost a Premier League home game in which they led at some stage for the first time since a match against Arsenal in February 2023, ending a 45-game unbeaten league run at Villa Park when leading, with 39 wins and six draws, while Chelsea left encouraged by a decisive away performance.
