Chelsea visit Wrexham in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday, with Joao Pedro heading into the tie in outstanding form. Liam Rosenior has highlighted the forward’s recent level, stressing the importance of Pedro’s all-round contribution as Chelsea chase silverware in English domestic competitions this season.
Since Rosenior’s appointment in January, Joao Pedro has become Chelsea’s main attacking threat. The Brazilian scored a hat-trick and added an assist in the 4-1 Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Wednesday, becoming the first player this season to be directly involved in four goals in one league match.

Rosenior has turned to Joao Pedro as the focal point of Chelsea’s attack, and the numbers support that choice. Since Rosenior took charge, no player has produced more direct goal contributions in English domestic competitions than Joao Pedro, who has 12 involvements, split between 10 goals and two assists.
"I’ve had some great conversations with Joao since I came in," said Rosenior. "It isn’t about what I’ve done, it’s about what he has done. He has been magnificent and I don’t just mean with the goals, it’s his intensity and the understanding of the press. Tactically, what he gives us is magnificent. If you look at the teams I manage and coach, we try to create as best chances as possible for our nine, which is normally in the middle of the goal and six yards out. It was really pleasing to see the goals that we scored against Aston Villa, I know they were tap-ins but he was in the right place at the right time. It is really exciting for us to have a player at his level performing the way he is at the moment."
Chelsea and Wrexham have met only once before in the FA Cup, during the 1981-82 fourth round. Chelsea finally progressed after two replays in that tie. More recently, Chelsea have enjoyed trips to Wales, winning six of their last eight away matches there in all competitions.
| Team / Player | Competition | Key Statistic |
|---|---|---|
| Chelsea | Matches in Wales (all competitions) | Six wins, one draw, one defeat in last eight games |
| Chelsea | EFL Cup at Cardiff City | 3-1 away win this season |
| Joao Pedro | Premier League vs Aston Villa | Hat-trick and one assist in 4-1 win |
| Joao Pedro | Domestic competitions under Rosenior | 12 direct goal contributions (10 goals, two assists) |
Wrexham, now owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have climbed the divisions and carry strong momentum into this FA Cup clash. "It is a club that is on the rise," added Rosenior on Wrexham, who have attracted global attention and built a growing following around their progress.
Rosenior expects a demanding atmosphere at the Racecourse Ground and stressed the challenge. "There is a good energy and good vibe around them, and that is hard to play against that. For us, it’s an opportunity to win a trophy. It’s what football is about. It’s what the FA Cup is about. We are the favourites but we need to go and play like that."
Chelsea enter the tie as favourites, backed by Joao Pedro’s form and a strong record in Wales, yet Rosenior has underlined Wrexham’s rise and momentum. The match brings together a Premier League side hunting trophies and a lower-league club on an upward path, with FA Cup progress at stake.
