Sporting CP have announced Joao Pereira as their new head coach, succeeding Ruben Amorim, who has moved to Manchester United. Pereira, a former player with 154 appearances for Sporting, has signed a contract lasting until 2027 with the Primeira Liga champions. The 40-year-old also played under Amorim in the 2020-21 season when Sporting won their first league title in 19 years.
Pereira previously managed Sporting's Under-23 team, leading them in 53 matches and securing 20 victories (D17 L16), averaging 1.45 points per game. He recently coached Sporting's B team for just 11 games. Now, he eagerly anticipates managing the first team after the international break.

"As a player, Sporting gave me a lot," said Pereira. "They allowed me to play for the national team, join one of the best leagues globally, and return home twice. I only repaid them with a Super Cup and a national championship, which felt more like their gift to me."
Pereira expressed his desire to win more titles for Sporting as a coach because he believes they deserve it. He is confident about facing challenges and is optimistic about his tenure going well.
Pereira faces the challenge of following Amorim's successful tenure at Sporting. Amorim ended his time with a memorable 4-2 victory over Braga on Sunday. During his stint, he won 164 out of 231 games, achieving a club record win rate of 71%. Only Manchester City (127) surpassed Sporting's wins (122) across Europe's top leagues during this period.
"Ruben leaves behind a legacy," Pereira noted. "That legacy isn't only in titles, victories, and records but also in the unity he built among the Sporting family." He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with this legacy but is motivated to continue making Sporting successful.
Pereira's first test will be against fourth-tier Amarante in the Taca de Portugal on November 22. Following that match, Sporting will host Arsenal at Estadio Jose Alvalade in the Champions League five days later.
