Arne Slot Observes 'New Things' In Joe Gomez Amidst Liverpool Departure Speculation

Arne Slot has observed new qualities in Joe Gomez recently and commended the defender's dedication amid rumours of his departure from Liverpool. Gomez has been speculated to leave Anfield due to falling behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Jarell Quansah in the defensive hierarchy.

During Jurgen Klopp's final season in charge in 2023-24, Gomez made 32 Premier League appearances. However, 15 of those were as a substitute, and he often played as a full-back when the team faced injury issues. Despite being left out of Slot's first match, a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town, Gomez has been linked with moves to Aston Villa or Newcastle United.

Slot hinted that Gomez could be involved in the upcoming match against Brentford. "He's been in the right place for three weeks. He's worked really hard since he came back," Slot told reporters. "He didn't play a lot in the Euros; we had to manage his load, that's why he wasn't in the team last week."

In Gomez's absence, Quansah started alongside Van Dijk at Portman Road but was substituted for Konate at half-time. Slot explained that this change aimed to win more duels. Liverpool won only 41.5% of duels in the first half but improved to 54.5% after Konate replaced Quansah.

When asked about Quansah's reaction to being substituted, Slot said: "In a way you would expect a player to react. I spoke to him immediately after the game. At the end of that conversation he asked if he could train on Sunday."

Training and Injury Updates

"So he should have done recovery; he wanted to train," Slot continued regarding Quansah. "Unfortunately, I think on Tuesday, he picked up a bit of an injury, so he couldn't train on Wednesday; we will see if he can train today."

Slot added: "He reacted in a way that every player should react. I don't think there was that much init, though. Maybe the language was a problem; what I said was that he did not lose every duel but lost one or two important ones, one just before half-time."

"From what's been said to me, it sounds like what I said was that he lost every duel," Slot clarified.

This week has seen Gomez having a good training period regarding load management. "He's one of the players I see new things from," Slot noted.
