John Stones is set to lead England in their Nations League match against Greece on Thursday. Lee Carsley announced that Harry Kane will begin the game on the bench. Stones, who has earned 81 caps since his 2014 debut, will captain England for the first time from the start of a match.
Stones expressed his excitement about captaining England, saying, "It's everything I could have dreamed of as a kid. More for my family, to be able to see me walk out as England captain is a special moment, Stones said. One I can't thank Lee enough for. An incredible moment for me. To be walking out with the armband on is an absolute honour and a moment I'll cherish forever."

Carsley mentioned that Kane might still play against Greece and could feature in Sunday's match against Finland. Kane recently celebrated his 100th appearance for England by scoring twice in their victory over Finland last month. However, he sustained an ankle injury during Bayern Munich's draw with Bayer Leverkusen before the international break.
Kane has been training separately from the main squad due to this injury. Carsley stated, "Harry is nursing an injury, a small knock, something we won't take a chance with." This cautious approach ensures Kane's fitness for future matches.
Cole Palmer has been in outstanding form this season in the Premier League. The Chelsea forward has scored six goals in seven games, including four goals against Brighton before half-time—a Premier League first. Palmer leads the league with 11 goal involvements this season.
Only Bukayo Saka has created more chances than Palmer's 23 this season. Palmer was also named England's Men's Player of the Year for 2023-24. Carsley expects him to continue his impressive performances in upcoming fixtures.
Carsley praised Stones' achievement of captaining England, highlighting his professionalism and influence on younger players. "It's a brilliant achievement," Carsley said. He added that Stones deserves this role due to his numerous caps and leadership qualities.
The interim manager also spoke highly of Palmer's current form: "Cole is in fantastic form. He's carried that into this week," Carsley noted. He acknowledged working with Palmer for several years and expressed confidence in his ability to perform well in upcoming matches.
The upcoming matches will test both experienced players like Stones and emerging talents like Palmer as they aim to secure victories for England.
