Defending champions and hosts Qatar will look to establish themselves as the powerhouse of Asian football as they face surprise finalists Jordan in the all-Arab final of the AFC Asian Cup 2023.
In the semifinal match, Jordan overcame South Korea 2-0, while in a back-and-forth contest, Qatar prevailed 3-2 over Iran. In theory, Jordan's semifinal showdown against South Korea looked like a David vs. Goliath duel.
However, Jordan had the South Koreans chasing after them for the entire 90 minutes. Hussein Ammouta devised a brilliant tactical scheme, which his players flawlessly carried out. As a result, they did not allow a single effort on goal to be made by a Korean team, who are 64 places higher in FIFA rankings than Jordan and have some of the best attacking players in the region.
Following a thrilling comeback win against Iraq (3-2) in the round of 16, Jordan has improved their defensive play and has recorded back-to-back clean sheets. Jordan has been more successful playing transitional football than possession-based football; in five of their six Asian Cup games, they have had less than 50% of the ball, and in their one match where they have had more possession than the opposition, they have lost (1-0 to Bahrain).
The Chivalrous have been in two Asian tournament finals this century and lost both of them. Their only competitive final win came against Iraq in the 1999 Arab Games. The last time Jordan had triumphed over Qatar was in the 2008 West Asian Football Federation Championship semi-finals (3-0). Their comeback win, which came in a friendly match at the start of January, was 2-1.
At Al Thumama Stadium on Wednesday, fans from Qatar witnessed an intense semifinal encounter that came down to the wire and included numerous opportunities. The Iranians' goal in the fourth minute placed the hosts behind for the first time in an Asian Cup match since the group stage in 2015. Despite surrendering the early goal, the hosts went on to win their first-ever match at this competition in normal time.
Their goal in the 82nd minute proved to be sufficient to defeat Iran, who fought them to the very end, hitting the woodwork in the final seconds of stoppage time in the second half even though they were down a man.
