In a moment of brilliance in the closing minutes of the first half, the French forward contributed with a timely reminder of his attacking prowess and dribbled past three Madrid players in the opponent box to assist the only United goal of the match.

Martial assisted Jesse Lingard for the opening goal as Manchester United won the match 2-1 in a penalty shoot-out against the Los Blancos after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

The former Monaco player last season struggled to secure a first team place under Mourinho and many times there were questions raised about the player's future at United after Mourinho publicly criticised the player.

However, after yesterday's match manager Jose Mourinho finally, came out of the shell to praise the 21-year old.

He suggested that the French international has recently improved his work ethic massively at Manchester United but he now has to continue this form in a consistent way in the coming season to be more perfect.

"Obviously we want more consistency in his talent," Mourinho said.

"I think today was positive for him, that's why I left him for 90 minutes on the pitch."

"He was enjoying it and trying things, it's important to try things in these friendly matches, so it's good for Anthony and his confidence."

"He is a young player, still time to learn, still time to improve, still time to develop, and it's also his personality."

"I can say he is training better than before, he's working harder than before. It's just a question to bring his talent more in a consistent way."

Manchester United have been unbeaten in all the four pre-season games they have played so far at the United States . They now have only one match remaining there against Barcelona on Wednesday (July 26) which is in Washington DC.
