The Real Madrid player has now also become the first English midfielder to score 5+ goals in a single World Cup edition.
He is also only the third England player to achieve the same, as previously Harry Kane and Gary Lineker have done it. Gary Lineker set the benchmark in 1986 with six goals, famously winning the Golden Boot as England reached the quarter-finals. Harry Kane matched that level in 2018 with six goals, again claiming the Golden Boot, and has now repeated the feat in 2026.
