Julian Draxler slams PSG and teammates after the Champions League loss to Real Madrid

Paris Saint-Germain winger Julian Draxler has criticised head coach Unai Emery's tactics after the club's exit from the UEFA Champions League following a loss to Real Madrid.

Paris Saint-Germain winger Julian Draxler felt his team needs to improve after the Champions League exit

Paris, March 8: Paris Saint-Germain winger Julian Draxler has criticised head coach Unai Emery's tactics after the Parisian club exit from the Champions League following a 2-5 aggregate loss to Real Madrid in the Round of 16. The 24-year-old Julian Draxler was upset with the way his team played on Tuesday night. Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro scored to overcome Edinson Cavani's first-half strike in the second leg in Paris. The Ligue 1 giants had lost the first leg 1-3 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

While PSG missed their world-record signing Neymar in the match due to an injury, the German footballer was introduced on the field after 76 minutes when his team was beyond saving.

Draxler, who has been with PSG since January 2017, slammed Emery’s strategy. According to goal.com, Draxler told in an interview with ZDF, "It was insensitive. I didn't know what was going on. I was surprised and angry. The goal for 1-1 went in but it did not change anything for us. I felt we needed to keep pressing and playing offensively.”

Draxler felt it was all over when PSG were down to 10 men. Midfielder Marco Verratti was given the marching order in the 66th minute after picking up two bookings. "We lost a man, and even though we got it to 1-1 the whole stadium knew the game would not turn around because we didn't have the intensity on the pitch. Real Madrid played it out confidently and were not nervous at all," Draxler said.

The former Wolfsburg forward Draxler pointed out that PSG failed to put pressure on the Spanish team right from the beginning. "We played the ball back and forth but you cannot score just doing that. You have to put pressure on Real Madrid when you are 3-1 down, not just pass it back and forth and hope something falls for you. We needed to put pressure on the opponents right from the start. We didn't do that so we deserved to be eliminated," Draxler further said.

PSG are on the verge of regaining their Ligue 1 title, but their UEFA Champions League (UCL) record is yet to improve even spending a lot of money in the summer. Draxler was mindful of PSG's big spending and felt the club needed to think things through properly.

"In the summer we spent €400m and everyone was talking about how it was going to change things, but we have failed to get through this round again," Draxler said. "I am still convinced this team has a lot to give, but you can see in games like this that there is still something missing if we want to win the big trophy. That should make us think again."
