Jurgen Klopp Set to Become Germany Head Coach as DFB Agrees Deal in Principle
Jurgen Klopp is set to become the next head coach of the Germany national team after reaching an agreement in principle with the German Football Association (DFB), following the World Cup 2026.
As per The Athletic, the former Liverpool manager is expected to sign a contract that will keep him in charge through the FIFA World Cup 2030, with only the final formalities and his departure from Red Bull yet to be completed.

The appointment would mark Klopp's return to frontline coaching just over a year after ending his highly successful nine-year spell at Liverpool. Since leaving Anfield in 2024, the 59-year-old has served as Red Bull's Head of Global Soccer, overseeing football operations across the company's network of clubs. Negotiations involving Red Bull are understood to be ongoing, but all parties are reportedly confident of reaching a resolution.
Germany moved swiftly in its search for a new manager after Julian Nagelsmann stepped down following their disappointing World Cup 2026 campaign. Germany exited in the Round of 32, where they were eliminated by Paraguay in a penalty shootout.
Klopp quickly emerged as the federation's preferred candidate, with discussions progressing rapidly over the past week. Senior DFB officials reportedly travelled to New York for face-to-face talks, where the framework of a long-term agreement was finalised. The federation is now working to complete the remaining contractual details before making the appointment official.
The German tactician recently indicated that he was open to returning to coaching after taking a break from the demands of club football.
Speaking earlier this month, Klopp said he felt "recharged" and ready for a new challenge, while acknowledging that any move would require discussions with Red Bull due to his existing contractual commitments.
Should the deal be completed, Klopp is expected to assemble a trusted coaching team, with former Liverpool assistant Pepijn Lijnders among the names linked with joining his backroom staff.
Klopp arrives with one of the most accomplished managerial résumés in modern football. He transformed Borussia Dortmund into Bundesliga champions, won the UEFA Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool.
