Juventus Boss Thiago Motta Questions Team Character Following AC Milan Defeat

Juventus manager Thiago Motta expressed disappointment with his team's mindset following their defeat to AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final. Juventus initially led through Kenan Yildiz's first-half goal but lost their advantage due to Christian Pulisic's goal and a Federico Gatti own goal in the final 20 minutes. This marks the fourth time in eight games that Juventus has failed to secure a win after leading.

Motta has faced criticism for his substitutions, yet he focused on questioning his players' mentality. He stated, "We certainly cannot be happy with what we did, especially in the first half. In the second we also failed to convert chances to kill the game. Milan did very little, too, so they should not have been able to win." Motta emphasised that character is crucial when facing setbacks and lamented their lack of response to adversity.

Despite this setback, Juventus remains within reach of significant achievements this season. They are three points away from the top four in Serie A and two points shy of automatic Champions League qualification. The team aims to compete strongly on both fronts as they navigate these challenges.

Francisco Conceicao's absence due to a muscle injury added to Juventus' difficulties. Motta commented on Conceicao's situation: "We will evaluate him, he felt a twinge and was not able to start the match. He is an important player for us, in the second half we needed something extra and he could've given us that." Balancing playing time among players is crucial as they work hard throughout the season.

Motta defended his decisions during matches, stating that all choices are made for the team's benefit. He said, "All the choices I make during the match are for the good of the team, it is up to you to judge whether I did it right or not." The focus remains on improving their character and resilience when faced with negative incidents during games.
