Juventus Head Coach Thiago Motta Reflects On Elimination By PSV In Champions League Play-Offs

Thiago Motta discusses Juventus' elimination from the Champions League after a defeat to PSV. He acknowledges the team's struggles and highlights areas needing improvement.

Juventus' exit from the Champions League play-offs was attributed to their inability to maintain control during the second leg against PSV, according to head coach Thiago Motta. Despite winning the first leg, Juventus lost 3-1 in extra time in Eindhoven, marking their first knockout tie loss after a first-leg victory. Motta expressed disappointment over their performance, particularly in the second half.

PSV's triumph marked their first progression through a Champions League knockout tie since defeating Arsenal in the 2006-07 season. Juventus captain Manuel Locatelli expressed frustration, stating they had squandered their qualification chances. However, Motta disagreed with this assessment, acknowledging PSV's superior play but maintaining that Juventus fought until the end.

Motta Reflects on Juventus' Elimination by PSV

Motta highlighted missed opportunities and defensive lapses as key factors in their defeat. "We struggled in the second half, had equalised in such an important moment for us and we were not capable of holding on to it," he told Sky Sport Italia. He noted that while they had chances, including Dusan Vlahovic hitting the woodwork, PSV's determination ultimately prevailed.

Locatelli's post-match comments reflected deep disappointment. "It hurts so much because we had it in our hands and threw away a qualification," he said. He emphasised the need for unity and accountability within the team to overcome this setback. Locatelli acknowledged PSV's superior desire and performance on the pitch.

Juventus faced challenges throughout the match, struggling to counter PSV's aggressive play. Motta admitted that while they anticipated PSV's attacking style, they failed to execute necessary strategies consistently. The two goals conceded were particularly disappointing due to predictable plays and defensive errors.

The defeat means Italy will have only one club in the Champions League Last 16 for just the third time since 2014/15 and 2013/14 seasons. This statistic underscores the difficulty Italian clubs face in European competitions this season.

Motta concluded by stressing that improvements are needed if Juventus hopes to compete at this level consistently. He acknowledged moments where Juventus matched PSV but admitted that overall, PSV deserved their victory due to their stronger performance throughout the match.

The loss serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by top clubs in maintaining consistency at elite levels of competition. Juventus must now regroup and focus on addressing weaknesses exposed during this encounter with PSV.
