Juventus Suffer 5-2 Defeat To Galatasaray As Spalletti Criticises Discipline And Away Form

Luciano Spalletti criticised Juventus after a 5-2 first-leg defeat to Galatasaray, saying the team showed a marked drop in character and discipline. The result added to Juventus's away-game woes in the Champions League play-off, with visitors dominating and multiple bookings complicating Juve's path to progression.

Luciano Spalletti delivered a blunt assessment of Juventus after the 5-2 Champions League defeat at Galatasaray, describing the performance as a major step backwards and leaving Juventus facing a serious battle to reach the last 16 from their play-off tie.

The first leg in Istanbul saw Juventus concede five times, finish with 10 players and squander control of key moments, including a costly defensive mistake for Galatasaray’s fourth goal and another dismissal for a substitute, as Juan Cabal saw red with 23 minutes remaining.

Juventus suffer 5-2 Galatasaray defeat

Spalletti was clear that Juventus fell far below the expected level across the 90 minutes. "We ended the first half badly, tried to get back into shape and changed a few things, but we really dropped off in terms of character," Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia. "It was not one step back, but three steps back this evening."

The coach highlighted how early bookings damaged any chance of a stable second-half response. "Clearly, Cambiaso risked a second yellow card at the end of the first half. In these games, when you have someone on a card, it is wise to do something with the substitutions. However, we received two more yellow cards in the first 15 or so minutes, then we did further damage to ourselves by not recognising the danger in those situations."

Juventus reached an unwanted Champions League landmark in this game. Cabal’s dismissal meant Juventus became the first club in the competition’s history to collect 30 red cards. Cabal also became the fourth Juventus substitute to be sent off in the tournament, which is the highest number for any single team.

Those disciplinary problems added to a long-running struggle away to Galatasaray. Juventus have now played four Champions League games in Istanbul without a victory, drawing once and losing three times. Against no other opponent have Juventus played more away fixtures in the competition and still failed to win.

The key incident involving Cabal came immediately after half-time. Cabal replaced Andrea Cambiaso during the interval, with Spalletti trying to avoid Cambiaso receiving a second booking. Instead, the substitute collected two yellow cards in roughly 20 minutes, leaving Juventus to finish the match with 10 players.

Galatasaray’s fourth goal underlined Juventus’ nervousness in possession near their own area. Juventus tried to pass their way out from the back, but Lloyd Kelly was caught on the ball inside the box and Noa Lang pounced on the turnover to score, punishing the risky approach.

Spalletti defended his preference for building from the back but stressed that players must read danger better. "I want them to play the ball in normal situations, but when there is extreme danger, you kick it away," added Spalletti. "I want us to create something going forward, not just breaking up the play. Not every situation is the same, sometimes you kick it away and release some pressure. I like to play the ball in general, but there are different situations. When down to 10 men, thats a difficult situation. We made the substitution to take pressure off one player and his replacement received two yellow cards in 20 minutes. That makes everything tougher. Quite apart from the cards, the whole team took a few steps back in various ways today."

With a three-goal deficit from the first leg, a poor disciplinary record and a winless history away to Galatasaray in the Champions League, Juventus now face a demanding second leg if qualification for the last 16 is to remain a realistic target.
