London, Aug 28: Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has suggested he thinks the utilization of Video Assistant Referees is punishing football's excitement value and transforming it into "water polo."
Serie A is one of the leagues where the newly developed system has been deployed by IFAB officials.
The Italian champions were benefitted from the activity as Juventus got two penalties due to VAR in consecutive two matches.
Against Genoa, in the last match, Paulo Dybala got the second goal from his hat-trick to win the game 4-2 after conceding two goals.
However, the veteran goalkeeper now suggested that Serie A is overusing the review system and raised voice about the way in which its use interrupts the swing of games.
"They told us that VAR would be used in clear-cut incidents where there were mistakes, but now you are even checking the replays for a trodden toe or a finger in an ear," the goalkeeper told reporters.
"It's no longer football -- it's turning into water polo. It takes too long. I didn't celebrate when we were awarded a penalty because six minutes had passed.
"Last season we had three penalties in our favour, but if it carries on like this, we'll have 50. I'm happy with that as a Juventus player, but it ruins the entertainment factor."
Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri alike Buffon, was also made criticism of the utilization of VAR, insisting the system adds a part of confusion to matches.
“Thankfully the lads brought the points home, but in terms of the VAR it will take a little patience. We all need a period to adapt,” Allegri told Mediaset Premium.
“Just as we need to focus on improving in our duties, so too must the referees to make VAR quicker and more effective.”
"Another thing is that the matches become very long and we don't know when they're going to finish."
