Kalinga Super Cup 2024, NorthEast United vs Shillong Lajong: NorthEast United and Shillong Lajong will face off in North-East Derby as Group B Round 2 Matches takes place at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Monday (January 15).

Apart from the pressure of a derby, both sides will fight to stay relevant in the tournament. A defeat will end their chances of reaching the semifinals as both sides already lost their opening Group B matches to Kerala Blasters and Jamshedpur FC, who square off later in the day.

Shillong Lajong struggled against ISL leaders Kerala Blasters in the opening match with Kwame Peprah's pace worrying the Shillong defense. They conceded twice to the foreigner before Renan Paulino pulled one back from the spot following a foul inside the box.

However, any hope for a comeback was killed early by KBFC as Mohammed Aimen scored early in the second half. Shillong Lajong never looked threatening from that point on as their attempt for a comeback died after that point.

Shillong Lajong came into Kalinga Super Cup after a little hiatus as their most recent I-League match on December 23 against Namdhari. Shillong Lajong are currently positioned fifth in the I-League 2023-24 with 19 points from 11 games. Bobby Nongbet's team has won just two of its last six games.

NorthEast United, on the other hand, conceded their last game after taking an early lead. Nestor Albiach's first-half goal was cancelled by Daniel Chima Chukwu (68') and Steve Ambri (88'). NEUFC were at fault for taking their foot off the gas as they went to defend a slender one-goal lead.

The Guwahati-based side comes into the game on an eight-match winless streak with head coach Juan Benali facing the heat following a contract extension.
