Tuchel Explains Why Kane, Bellingham And Foden Cannot All Play Together For England

Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, has stated that Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Phil Foden cannot all be accommodated in the same team. England has already secured their spot in the upcoming World Cup. They aim to finish their qualifying campaign strongly against Serbia on Thursday and Albania on Sunday.

Foden has not been part of Tuchel's squad since March, despite his recent form with Manchester City. Bellingham has also been absent from the national team since June due to a shoulder surgery that delayed his start with Real Madrid this season.

In September, England delivered an impressive 5-0 victory over Serbia. In that match, Morgan Rogers, Noni Madueke, and Anthony Gordon played behind Kane in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Tuchel is open to leaving out prominent players if they don't fit into his tactical setup.

"At the moment, if we keep the structure, they cannot play," Tuchel explained regarding Kane, Bellingham, and Foden. He emphasised the importance of maintaining balance within the team structure. The current system includes a number six, eight, ten, and nine positions.

Kane, Bellingham, and Foden were key players during Euro 2024 when England reached the final but lost 2-1 to Spain. Foden faced criticism for not contributing to goals directly. Meanwhile, Kane scored three goals and Bellingham contributed two goals and an assist.

Tuchel highlighted the abundance of talent in the number ten position. "There is a lot of congruence," he said about options like Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and Morgan Gibbs-White. This depth means tough decisions are inevitable for squad selection.

Foden's Versatility

Tuchel acknowledged that not all five players would likely make it into his squad. However, he noted Foden's adaptability as a potential advantage. "If you're a unique player," Tuchel remarked about Foden's ability to play as both a number nine and ten.

For Manchester City, Foden often plays as a number eight or ten. This flexibility might lead to considering him for different roles in future tournaments. Yet Tuchel remains cautious about taking too many similar players into competitions.

The focus remains on selecting players who best fit the team's needs and strategies for success. Balancing individual talent with team dynamics is crucial for achieving positive results in upcoming matches and tournaments.
