Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City FC Share Spoils In Goalless ISL Thriller In Kochi

Kerala Blasters FC and Mumbai City FC were forced to settle for a point each after playing out a goalless draw in the MG Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 at a packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi on Sunday.

Despite several promising opportunities at both ends, neither side managed to find the decisive goal in an entertaining contest.

Kerala Blasters

The result offered Kerala Blasters an opportunity to recover from their disappointing 4-1 defeat to NorthEast United FC, while Mumbai City FC continued their campaign following a 1-1 draw against Punjab FC.

Both teams showed attacking intent throughout the match, but impressive goalkeeping, last-ditch defending and missed chances ensured the scoreline remained unchanged.

Kerala Blasters began the contest with an aggressive approach, looking to make the most of their home support. Mohammed Sanan was particularly influential in the opening exchanges, creating problems for Mumbai City's defence with his pace and dangerous deliveries into the penalty area.

The hosts came close to taking the lead in the 11th minute when a Sanan cross caused confusion inside the six-yard box. Hormipam Ruivah found himself in a promising position amid the scramble, but his effort struck the side netting.

Mumbai City initially struggled to establish control, but gradually grew into the game and began creating opportunities of their own.

The visitors came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 23rd minute. Muhammed Ajsal did well to control Carlos Delgado's lofted pass before advancing into the penalty area and sending a cross towards PN Noufal.

Noufal connected with a powerful right-footed effort from close range, only for Kerala Blasters goalkeeper Amrinder Singh to produce an outstanding reflex save and keep the Islanders at bay.

Mumbai City made their first substitution in the 39th minute, introducing Lalnuntluanga Bawitlung in place of Leandro Otormin as they looked to strengthen their attacking threat.

Sanan nearly provided the breakthrough for Kerala Blasters in first-half stoppage time. The forward skilfully beat his marker with a stepover before unleashing a left-footed shot across goal, but the attempt narrowly missed the target.

Both sides headed into the interval with the score locked at 0-0, having created enough opportunities to suggest that the deadlock could be broken after the restart.

Kerala Blasters introduced Sreekuttan M S for Korou Singh Thingujam at the beginning of the second half, hoping to inject fresh energy into their attack.

However, Mumbai City almost took the lead six minutes after the restart. Valpuia's free-kick forced Amrinder to rush off his line and clear the danger, but the ball fell into a dangerous area.

Akash Mishra attempted to capitalise on the opportunity with a header, only to see his effort crash against the woodwork. The hosts survived a major scare as Mumbai City came within inches of taking the lead.

With the contest becoming increasingly open, Kerala Blasters made a double substitution in the 60th minute, replacing Sanan and Momo Yansane with Ebindas Yesudasan and Andre Green.

Mumbai City continued to search for an opener, with Noufal threatening once again in the 71st minute. After carrying the ball forward along the wing, he unleashed a right-footed shot from distance, but Amrinder was equal to the challenge.

The rebound fell kindly for Ajsal, who had an opportunity to put the visitors ahead but sent his effort over the crossbar.

Kerala Blasters increased their attacking efforts during the closing stages, repeatedly sending crosses into the penalty area in search of a late winner. However, Mumbai City's defensive unit remained organised and dealt with the pressure effectively.

The Islanders made another change in the 85th minute, bringing on Hridaya Jain for Ajsal. Both teams continued to make adjustments as the match entered stoppage time, with Kerala Blasters introducing Vibin Mohanan for Adrian Luna. Mumbai City also brought on Supratim Das and Yuvraj Kadam, replacing Puipuia and Farukh Choudhary.

Despite the late flurry of attacking moves, neither side could find the finishing touch required to claim all three points.

The final whistle confirmed a 0-0 draw, with both teams sharing the spoils after an evenly contested encounter. While Kerala Blasters will take encouragement from their defensive resilience and attacking intent, Mumbai City will rue the missed opportunities that prevented them from securing an away victory.

The result leaves both sides with work to do as they look to build momentum in the ongoing ISL campaign.
